Would have liked to e-mail this, but here goes. Not sure how much of a hockey fan you are, but there have been a couple of hate-motivated incidents lately.

Last week a fan in Canada threw a banana peel at black forward Wayne Simmonds. Early this week Simmonds was caught on camera calling Marriage Equality activist Sean Avery a faggot during a game.

Predictably the former incident is sparking a lot more outrage and getting a lot more attention. (To be fair some of that is because Avery is not very well liked as a player.)

It jumps out to me how (with such incidents) it can become so crystal clear that different types of discrimination and hate speech for different things can have such different values of reprehensibility. What bothers me is not the trash talk (I'm sure players have said worse), but the fact that the fans and media are more okay with one incident than the other. That feels wrong.
