I've been hearing for a long time what a wonderful man the new Pope Francis is. This from people I know in the gay community, including my other half. I reserved judgment because in my heart of hearts, I knew that this "wonderful man" was probably no different than his predecessor and time would tell. Now we know. Pope Francis is almost worse than the previous pope. Though Pope Benedict is very outspoken in his homophobia, we knew exactly where he stands. Pope Francis is more insidious. He shows a public face of seeming saintliness to the world and underneath is still just a rotten bigot. And Catholics wonder why their parishes are dwindling, their churches are closing all over the world and they can't successfully recruit for the clergy anymore. In a few decades, I suspect the Roman Catholic church, like many others, will be not much more than an historical anachronism.
