Why the religious right are actually scared to debate gay issues

There is a reason why Peter Sprigg and Tony Perkins of the Family Resewarch Council deliberately avoids debates on gay issues in spite of their insistence that they do want to debate. The following video demonstrates why:

Granted, the religious right spokesperson, Candi Cushman of Focus on the Family, did alright here. But she was clearly called out:

  1. I finally got around to watching the video.

Cushman did what all religious right speakers try to do - which is deliberately confuse the issue and pretend that it's about sex rather than tolerance. The other guests did an okay job of calling her out but Drew, like most talking heads, sucked. The point that the religious right tries to push is that you can't talk about different sexual orientations without talking about sex as if saying, "Some people fall in love with members of their own gender" means you have to start diagramming anal sex.

That position is grounded in the religious right's fundamental misunderstanding of sexual orientation. They pretend there is no such thing as gay people, that being gay is only about behavior. Cushman waving around that book and saying "It included an explicit description of sex" is fear mongering but is also about the idea that no one is really gay, they just have gay sex. The book she had (I believe) is real life stories from glbt persons of their seventh grade in school. She's objecting to someone's real life experience as a way of saying we shouldn't teach that real live people exist. IOW, Cushman, like other right wingers, wants to edit gay people out of existence since we don't' conform to her view of how sexual orientation works.
