In the face of the fake experts whining about how gays serving openly in the military will harm the country comes this awesome video via The Huffington Post:
The U.S. Department of Defense released a heartwarming video Sept. 25 depicting the lived impact of the recent extension of spousal and family benefits to same-sex military couples. Senior Chief Dwayne Beebe-Franqui and Jonathan Beebe-Franqui discuss both the symbolic and tangible importance of being able to apply for a military ID card as the same-sex spouse of an official, and the changing perception of same-sex relationships in the U.S. military since the 2011 repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
The military has been leading this country as examples of how anti-discrimination works. They have been leaders in breaking the barriers to race, gender and now orientation. The death of DADT was the important first step in our fight for equality. The nations equal marriage issues may well be solved because of military bases located in states that have bans and discriminatory laws. We are blessed to have a voluntary armed service who will teach the rest of our people it is possible to get along and thrive together. I don't support war but I support our brave troops.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, a critical consequence of repealing DADT is ALSO the prevailing opinion that equality, as relates to the military, at least, is "done," which leaves trans service members still serving and suffering in silence and in the closet.
