Flashback: National Coming Out Day 1988 and The Oprah Winfrey Show

Today is the 28th National Coming Out Day. Rather than any long-winded posts about the importance of coming out, how about a blast from the past?

The following is a clip from the Oprah Winfrey Show which spotlighted the first National Coming Out Day in 1988. The words uttered here by members of the LGBT community are as poignant now as they were back then:

  1. Thanks Alvin for posting this clip. We have come so far in the past 28 years, but we still have further to go for the LGBT community to reach full equality in our country. That is why we must persevere. The most moving part of this clip for me is when Dr. Eichberg says, "we are people and are sexuality is only a part of us."

  2. Oprah did an amazing job of taking issues that were, at the time, scandalous and treating them with dignity and respect. I probably watched that show and processed it internally, but I was not a self aware child when it came to that sort of thing. I didn't know how it would resonate with me when I grew up. When I did come out, it was the biggest nonevent ever.
