Mercedes and Matt Schlapp |
An unfortunate feature of the modern day Republican Party is its tendency to mistake trolling on Twitter for actual legislative work. However Wednesday, one of its operatives learned a valuable lesson about the drawbacks of being a complete ass online.
Former employee of the Trump Administration and highly connected member of the Republican party, Mercedes Schlapp took it upon herself to troll Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Earlier that day, a computer outage at the Federal Aviation Administration grounded thousands of flights. The system is back up for now but during the time it was down, Schlapp was one of several GOP operatives and legislator making cheap shots at Buttigieg and by association President Biden for the situation.
Schlapp sent out the following tweet:
Schlapp's tweet was an attempt to build on a conservative false narrative started last year that Buttigieg takes too many vacations and thereby isn't up to his job. Of course some folks have pointed out that attacks on Buttigieg is less about vacation time and more about the fact that he is the first openly gay cabinet member in United States history.
Various comments responding to Schlapp's tweet embraced this notion by making crude jokes about him needing to breastfeed his two infants which he and his husband, Chasten, became the fathers of by surrogates in 2021.
But Buttigieg's sexual orientation quickly became a weapon against Schlapp. You see, last week her husband, Matt Schlapp, was accused of sexually assaulting a young man who was driving him around during last year's mid-term election. According to the young man, Schlapp groped and fondled his groin and wanted him to come up to his hotel room.
On Wednesday, the same day in which Mercedes chose to troll Buttigieg, more evidence came out which corroborated the young man's claim against her husband.
Armed with these facts, other responder on Twitter chose to be, shall we say, less kind to Mercedes.

We know where Pete and his husband are, and they're doing just fine. I'd be worried about where *your* husband is.

So you know where Matt’s hands have been?

I’m amazed you asked such an open-ended question, with the current situation your partner is in.

Madam, I admire your willingness to proceed with your political commentary while pretending nothing has been reported about your husband’s unfortunate and not so secret weenie addiction.

Probably being chased around a desk by your husband.

She should have kept her mouth shut. People tend to get nasty when you say nasty things.
