I would just like to point out that Marvel Comics has had many non-white and non-straight characters for decades. They had LGBT characters as early as the 80s.
For instance, the X-men character Mystique was in a lesbian relationship with a mutant named Destiny and their adopted daughter Rogue. It was in the early 80s, so the writers didn't state it explicitly until years later, but they deserve some credit for being ahead of their time in some of these comics.
I remember when Dare Devil came out. I was so excited to see a disabled hero. I also remember people saying it was just stupid to think a blind man could be a hero and do the things he did. It is far more than high time we had some real heroes who looked like us and had our lives.
