Proud Boys lose their trademark name to a Black church after court judgement

A little bit of karma to make you smile. Trump may be back (God help us) but it looks like the Proud Boys aren't going to be with him.

From The Huffington Post:

A Black church in Washington, D.C., now owns the “Proud Boys” trademark after a judge stripped it from the right-wing group in a judgment Monday. The ruling gives the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church complete control over the group’s name and symbols, including the ability to monetize them as they see fit.

Judge Tanya Jones Bosier of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia awarded the trademark after the group failed to pay a $2.8 million default judgment given in 2023 when they didn’t show up in court. Should the church so choose, it’s now free to sell, transfer and license the Proud Boys trademark, including a black and yellow wreath logo with “PB” in the middle. Proud Boys chapters across the country can no longer use the name or iconography either, unless granted approval by the church.

. . .Church leaders filed suit after Proud Boys members vandalized the house of worship during a violent Dec. 12, 2020, “Million MAGA March” in support of Donald Trump after he lost the presidential election that year.

For those who aren't aware, the Proud Boys is a creepy, homophobic, racist group which associated itself with Donald Trump during his first term in office.

I personally think the group has some homoerotic tendencies. Its founder and former leader, Gavin McInnes, shoved a dildo up his own rear to supposedly prove that he wasn't homophobic.

Or something like that.

Several school systems say they will defy Donald Trump's anti-Black, anti-LGBTQ executive order

Donald Trump's executive order attacking the visibility of Black and LGBTQ students isn't getting as much attention in the media as it should. But at least someone is covering it. Last year's GLAAD Media Award winner (in the category of Outstanding Blog) Erin Reed is finding out some very positive things about it. Apparently, school systems across the nation are saying that they will defy Trump.

On Thursday, Julie Yang, President of the Montgomery County Board of Education in Maryland, issued a forceful response to Trump’s executive order in a mass email to families. Representing a school district of 160,000 students, Yang affirmed that Montgomery County would continue to recognize gender identity as a protected characteristic. “We stand by our community and school system values, which include learning, relationships, respect, excellence, and equity. They guide us every day and anchor us when navigating difficult times. We intend to use all legal means necessary to uphold them… We are committed to maintaining local authority over our curriculum, teaching, and learning. And we will fiercely support our teachers and staff as they implement our curriculum and policies.”

Harrisonburg City Public Schools Superintendent Michael Richards also issued a strong response to Trump’s executive order. The district was one of three specifically named in the order for its policies supporting transgender students. In his statement, Richards pushed back forcefully, saying, “The claims in their statement are false. We do not have a policy that violates anyone’s rights or indoctrinates children. What we do have is a culture of respect—one that honors the dignity and diversity of all students, families, and educators.”

San Francisco Unified School District also responded to Trump’s executive order, affirming that it would continue to embrace its diversity as a core strength. “This includes our district’s trans-identified students and all of our LGBTQ+ students and families,” the statement read. The district made clear that its core values would not change, emphasizing its commitment to supporting all students’ rights, including “addressing students using the name and pronoun that reflects who they are” and “providing access to school activities, spaces such as locker rooms and restrooms, and gender-neutral dress codes that fit with their gender identity.”

There are several others included. Let me give some kudos to Reed for doing what the mainstream media isn't doing in devoting suitable time to our issues. Reed's emphasis dealt with how schools are standing with trans students, but it doesn't take a palm reader to tell that these schools are with the other communities - LGB and Black students - who Trump is targeting.

In addition, Amanda Marcotte of the online site Salon is predicting that Trump's executive order could backfire. She points out, first of all, that his threat to take away funding from schools who go against his executive order has very little power:

As Dana Goldstein at the New York Times reports, "States and localities provide 90 percent of the funding for public education — and have the sole power to set curriculums, tests, teaching methods and school-choice policies." What federal funding exists "goes out to states in a formula set by Congress, and the president has little power to restrict its flow." State and local officials in blue states and cities are already telling Trump where to shove his executive order.

Marcotte also said:

. . . As I learned covering a school curriculum fight swing county in suburban Pennsylvania in 2023, parents will often put up an extraordinary fight to wrest control back from right-wing ideologues. It's not because they're "woke" and want to "indoctrinate" children with leftist ideals. Many of these parents were not especially political people, especially compared to their conservative opponents, who were rabidly ideological. Their concerns were kids having a real education and a safe environment to learn in. I didn't get the sense that parents were overly worried their kids would be "indoctrinated" by the right-wing propaganda that Republicans were pushing on the school district. Instead, they were worried about what kids weren't learning if teachers were wasting time with fake lessons about a MAGA fantasy of the past.

Why Trump's latest EO is a disturbing attempt to silence Black and LGBTQ students as well as teachers and schools

Anti-LGBTQ group Libs of TikTok hopes that Trump's latest executive order will ban any LGBTQ mention in classrooms.

Another day, another ridiculous executive order from Donald Trump. This time he is targeting LGBTQ and Black students.

From Scripps News:

President Donald Trump signed an executive order aiming to halt what he calls “radical indoctrination” in K-12 schools, specifically targeting "critical race theory" and "gender ideology." The order prohibits federal funding for schools that incorporate critical race theory and other teachings Trump’s administration deems inappropriate. It also directs the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Defense, who oversees Department of Defense-run schools, to develop a strategy within 90 days to halt such teachings from classrooms. The order fulfills a promise President Trump made while campaigning.

. . .Critical race theory is an academic concept that was originally taught at the college level. It involves analyzing how race and racism intersect with social structures and institutions. The extent to which critical race theory is taught in K-12 schools. While it may not be taught in its original form, critical race theory has taken on a new meaning for some. Some conservatives argue discussions around diversity, equity and inclusion amount to critical race theory.

As the article says, critical race theory is taught at the college level, not K-12 schools. But conservatives have distorted the meaning of critical race theory to imply that amplifying the point of view of the Black Americans or looking at history from the point of view of Black Americans is somehow racist against white people.

According to The Hill:

But in his order, Trump used the example of the Albemarle County School District in Virginia, which the administration says created an “anti-racism” policy that taught a student “her achievement was based on her race,” alleging the incident was a result of CRT. It is unclear what the criteria will be for the Department of Education to determine if a school is teaching CRT.

One has to guess that this is deliberate. By not specifically defining what exactly "critical race theory" is while being specific about the punishment - i.e. denial of federal dollars - Trump's executive order creates a climate of fear in which schools may tread too lightly in talking about race for fear getting into trouble. If this sounds familiar, it should for those who remember the "Don't Say Gay" law in Florida, in which the same tactic was used about LGBTQ issues in the classroom.

And speaking of LGBTQ issues, according to The Huffington Post:

The executive order on “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling,” which Trump signed Wednesday, also directs the incoming attorney general to work alongside state attorneys general and local district attorneys to “file appropriate actions against K-12 teachers and school officials who violate the law by: sexually exploiting minors; unlawfully practicing medicine ... without the requisite license; or otherwise unlawfully facilitating the social transition of a minor.”

Social transition is not a medical procedure. It refers to when a person is able to live publicly as their gender identity and often includes using or trying out a new name, set of pronouns, clothing and hairstyles. The order explicitly targets schools that allow transgender students to use bathrooms or participate in school sports that align with their gender identity.

The order contradicts conservatives' claims that their opposition with issues involving trans kids has to do with children being so-called surgically mutilated (which is a lie in itself.) Trump's order tries to outright police any attempt by trans kids to be their authentic selves in public schools even if the schools are accepting of them doing so.

The Huffington Post article also states the LGBTQ activists fear that the order could also target LGBTQ books in general.  I think the implications go beyond that. My opinion is that it also renders LGB students and students with LGBTQ parents as invisible too because of the portion which mentions "sexually exploiting minors."

Again, there is that vagueness. What constitutes sexually exploiting a minor? Some anti-LGBTQ groups and activists define anything regarding LGBTQ culture as "sexually explicit. We saw this when legislators tried to define drag queens as sexually explicit by nature even when there would be no sexual content involved in their presentations, i.e. the Mary Sue case in Florida. And we've also seen books with no sexually explicit material being banned simply because they contained LGBTQ characters or themes.

But if you have any doubts about how the executive order could render all LGBTQ children as invisible, don't take my word for it.

The infamous anti-LGBTQ site Libs of TikTok seems to think so.

I should also point out that Libs of TikTok is saying that it will "expose" people and schools who it feels will be acting contrary to Trump's executive order (see second picture). Libs of TikTok's past "exposure" has played a lot of havoc in the lives of people and institutions it targeted, specifically bomb threats to hospitals. Trump's EO subtly empowers the group to act as some sort of unofficial monitor of America's schools, thereby helping to further an atmosphere of fear for schools, teachers, and especially children.

Trump's executive order will probably be challenged. Whatever the case may be, don't fall for the potential gaslighting. This is not about helping children. This is about silencing Black and LGBTQ kids and kids who have LGBTQ parents, as well as sending a false and particularly disturbing message to them that they don't matter in America.

Trump's latest executive order creates federal restriction on gender-affirming care for trans youth under 19

Donald Trump seems to think that he can use executive orders to make edicts. That's not his job. He isn't king. However, he seems to think he is and he's willing to hurt kids to prove it.

From The Associated Press:

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order aimed at cutting federal support for gender transitions for people under age 19, his latest move to roll back protections for transgender people across the country.

“It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures,”

. . . Medicaid programs in some states cover gender-affirming care. The new order suggests that practice could end and target hospitals and universities that receive federal money and provide the care. The language in the executive order — using words such as “maiming,” “sterilizing” and “mutilation” — contradicts what is typical for gender-affirming care in the United States. It also labels guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health as “junk science.” Major medical groups such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics support access to the care.

From Axios:

The latest executive order applies to people under 19, categorizing 18 year olds with children.

What's next: Trump directed the Department of Health and Human Service to publish a review of existing literature on best practices for promoting the health of children with gender dysphoria within 90 days. The department was also directed to regulate programs like Medicare or Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, essential health benefit requirements and federally funded manuals of diseases and disorders. The head of each executive department or agency that provides research or education grants was ordered to take steps to ensure that institutions receiving funding end gender-affirming care. The order also calls for removing federal funding from medical schools and hospitals that research gender-affirming care.

Catch up quick: On Inauguration Day, Trump signed an executive order that the federal government would only recognize two sexes, male and female. He's since called on the Pentagon to formulate a new policy that would target transgender service members.

Trump believes that his war on the trans community was one of the reasons why he won last November, so he intends to continue it. And he is embracing the lies told about how gender-affirming care for trans kids is "mutilation."  This link tells the truth about what it entails.

According to National Public Radio. a study showed that a very small number of children receive gender-affirming care:

"It's important to put numbers to the debates that are currently happening," says Landon Hughes, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health. "There weren't any peer reviewed studies that were looking at the rate of hormone use and puberty blocker use among youth in the U.S., and so we wanted to fill that void."

Hughes and colleagues at Harvard and Folx Health, a virtual LGBTQ health care company, used a data set of private insurance claims from 2018-2022 that included more than 5 million adolescents. "The total number of youth who had any diagnosis of gender dysphoria was less than 18,000," Hughes explains.

"Among those folks, there were less than 1,000 [youth] that accessed puberty blockers and less than 2,000 that ever had access to hormones." In other words, the study found that less than 0.1% of teenagers with private insurance in the U.S. are transgender and receive gender-related medicines.

Axios also points out that:

Drugs like puberty blockers are temporary and reversible and used for both trans and non-trans youth who experience early onset puberty.

Between the lines: Fewer than 0.1% of adolescents received drugs for gender-affirming care between 2018 and 2022, per a study led by Harvard University researchers published this month. No patient under 12 years old who were transgender or gender diverse received hormones, the study found.

Zoom out: The Supreme Court, meanwhile, seems likely to uphold a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth following oral arguments last month. Since the first legislative ban on youth gender-affirming care was passed in 2021, such legislation has taken effect in 26 states, per the Human Rights Campaign.

Regardless of what stereotypes Trump exploits to wreak havoc, gender-affirming care for trans kids is vital for their health and survival He should not barter the health of these children to appease the ignorance of his supporters.  His position as president does not give him the power to interfere with or make private medical decisions against the wishes of families, no matter what subtle tactics he chooses to employ. It is the government's responsibility to provide adequate healthcare for its citizen. It is a right which should never be snatched away, especially through the edict of a power-hungry orange jackass who some people mistakenly put in the White House.

According to the Human Rights Campaign:

Conversely, bans on access to gender-affirming health care for youth can have devastating consequences. These laws interfere with the ability of transgender youth, their families, and their providers, to make the health care decisions that are right for them, and access the medical care they need.

No parent should ever be put in the position where they and their doctor agree on one course of action, supported by the overwhelming majority of medical experts, but the government forbids it. But that’s exactly what these health care bans do.

The simple existence of legislation to ban gender-affirming care can also have substantial negative consequences. Researchers and pollsters have consistently found that LGBTQ+ youth report worsening mental health, and increased anxiety and fear, as a result of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, with effects substantially worse for transgender and non-binary youth. Even among LGBTQ+ adults, who to date have largely not seen the same level of legislative attacks on their health care, this legislation is wreaking a toll.

In other news, Trump seems to be obsessed with undoing Joe Biden's progress with LGBTQ people:

Trump sycophant Franklin Graham accuses bishop of having an 'agenda' after sermon. Says 'Trump stands for truth.'

Donald Trump is furious at Mariann Edgar Budde, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, for publicly calling out his policies to his face while in the pulpit earlier this week. He's demanding an apology. Budde has refused to give one.

But Trump is not the only person angry at Budde. Pastor Franklin Graham publicly criticized Budde and accused her of having an "agenda."

From Raw Story

During a Wednesday interview on Newsmax, Graham criticized the bishop's Tuesday homily at the National Prayer Service with Trump ."She was wrong to do that," the reverend insisted. "That was really a national forum, a national stage pulpit that she was standing in. And for her to use that for her own political agenda was wrong."

"She is a socialist, activist, LGBTQ+ agenda, and that's, you know, so she's just wrong," he continued. "So these are activists, and no question, they hate Trump. I don't know why they hate Trump. Trump stands for truth."

He also took offense the (accurate) notion that Trump tells lies.

"He doesn't wake up in the morning, I think I'll see how many lies I can tell today," he asserted. "He may get some facts twisted up sometime, but he's not purposely out there lying, misleading people, but this lady is, she's misleading people, and she was wrong, and I would hope that whoever the powers that be would put somebody in the cathedral who doesn't have a political agenda or a sexual political agenda, but just somebody who would be there to open up the word of God and to encourage people to worship God."

Graham's criticism of Budde isn't sincere or truthful

It comes from a need to make excuses for Trump It's what Graham has been doing ever since 2016. As president, Trump made a bunch of political decisions which Graham as agreed with and has appointed many federal judges who shared Graham's conservative views of society (even when some of those judges were deemed unqualified.)

In return, Graham has exploited his own title as a religious leader, his social media access, and the reputation he inherited from his father to serve as bumper when Trump's actions and statements are called into question.

And as you can see by his unbelievable statement that Trump stands for truth, Graham has no problem playing Trump's drooling manservant. Even the point of revealing himself as a hypocrite with an embarrassingly lack of self-respect.

Below are just a few of the times Graham has debased himself to defend Donald Trump.

MAGAs furious after bishop publicly confronts Trump on his policies from the pulpit

Trump supporters (call them MAGAs or MAGAts) are always angry. They're always raging against the growing diversity of America because it reminds them that they are no longer in charge of things.  That's why they cling to Trump. He gives them the illusion of being in control and with him, they bask in that illusion instead facing the reality of a changing world.

Recently, they got a reminder of the diversity which scares them to their core. And boy did they ever get mad.

From MSNBC

Before dozens of attendees at a national prayer service in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington directly addressed President Donald Trump in her sermon, urging him to reconsider his attacks on marginalized communities.

“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” the Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde told Trump as he sat in the front row at the Washington National Cathedral. “There are gay, lesbian and transgender children, and Democratic and Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”

Budde made her plea on behalf of undocumented immigrants who work jobs, pay taxes and live among others, as well as refugees who come to the United States in search of safety and a better life. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities — these children fear that their parents will be taken away,” she said. “And that you help those that are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands find compassion and welcome here.”

Budde’s remarks came the day after Trump signed a raft of executive actions on his first day in office, including orders cracking down on immigration and rolling back protections for transgender Americans. Some of his executive orders — like his effort to roll back birthright citizenship — are already facing legal challenges.

Supposedly those who attended with Trump, particularly his wife Melania, were furious. Trump himself was not happy, showing displeasure in his face and in later comments.

Donald Trump, Melania Trump, J.D. Vance and his wife Usha Vance are not happy as  Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde calls him out on his policies during her sermon.

His supporters went through the proverbial roof on X (formerly known as Twitter)

Editor's note - The Bishop is a United States citizen

However, plenty of others defended the Bishop. And they called out the hypocrisy of those who condemned her for getting "political" during a religious ceremony.
