As a former 24-year resident of Des Moines (DSM), I'm frustrated with the "Des Moines pauses LGBTQ+ school book removal" headline.
The coverage is about a DSM suburb, Urbandale. The DSM public school system (DMPS) resides in the state capitol as the largest school district in the state with 33,000 students as of 2019-2020. Urbandale schools, from a more affluent area of the DSM metro, have an enrollment of 4,000.
It is great that the Urbandale district has scored this victory. Hopefully it translates into progress for the 33K students of the DMPS, as well as public school students throughout Iowa.
