Know Your LGBT History - A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

I betcha that not too many folks are aware of the fact that A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) was filled with homoerotic undertones.

Mark Patton (who later did come out as a gay man) portrays a teenager who is trying to keep from being possessed by serial killer Freddy Krueger.

Seriously though, with a plot so simple, why would someone think that this movie was gay? Well for starters, the character portrayed by Patton isn't the most masculine fellow in the world. It goes without saying that there were some scenes in which he reminded me of Sean Hayes from Will and Grace such as this one featuring him cleaning his room:

Then there is this scene where Freddy induces the young man to go to a club where he meets his coach (starting at 2:20):

S. said...: I'm a big fan of the NOES films, and NOES 2 is my least favorite of the series.

Part 2 has some homoerotic moments, but I have to add so is the character Dan (Alice's boyfriend) from parts 4 & 5. It was like the director deliberately focused on his cute butt quite a bit, and picked the right jeans to fit him too! LOL I believe he was also shirtless by the pool in part 5.; 8:06 PM
Terry said...: As a teen who hadn't quite worked out the whole gay thing, I knew there was *something* in the movie that resonated. I had that same worry that something terrible was inside me that I didn't understand.

Michelle said...: In the documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy(just finished watching it) screenwriter David Chaskin confirms that he had intentionally meant for the film to have homoerotic subtext though others who had worked on the film, including producer Robert Shaye and director Jack Sholder, claim that they were completely unaware of it at the time.I dont know if it came across good or bad(cause Im not a gay male)but if anything I felt kind of good see two men have sexual tention between each other. It made me feel ok about being attracted to females.; 9:48 AM
