As I read the NYT story, "Retailers Are Put on the Spot Over Anti-Gay Aid," it isn't the retailers who were giving to the anti-gay groups. They were just doing a normal business practice of giving a bonus to a group that sent customers their way. What if someone who has a Bank of America Visa card donates something he gets with his rewards points to Focus on the Family? Does that mean that Bank of America is giving to Focus on the Family? Of course not. Same here. It isn't the retailer who is giving to Focus on the Family; it is CGBG. And even CGBG doesn't donate to them unless the individual customer asks them to. The protesters are being intolerant.
Please with the "you are being intolerant by not tolerating my intolerance" semantic argument.
The protesters have every right to make their arguments known just those on the right do when they protest.
My real point is that the protesters are simply wrong to say that the retailers are the ones giving money to Focus on the Family.
naturgesetz: the retailers who use the anti-gay "Christian Values" people are aiding hate groups. The analogy would be if a Bank of America Visa Card allowed people to donate rewards points to the KKK or to Focus on the Family. They would also be wrong, and would be subject to protest. I would certainly discontinue my business with any credit card company that permitted its cardholders to subsidize those who are intent on denying me equal rights. That's why I no longer have a Target card and why I would rather starve than patronize Chik-fil-a.
Jay, it seems to me that the one who should be blamed is the one who decides where the money goes. To blame a retailer for treating all customers the same, or treating all organizations that refer customers the same still seems to me to be the height of confused thinking.
Sorry, naturegesetz, the height of confused thinking is not to see that a retailer who subsidizes a hate group is no friend of mine.
