As Freedom for All Americans have demonstrated conclusively, James Dobson (perhaps more than anyone else) is the central figure behind almost all anti-LGBT legislation in the United States. While he founded or co-founded several groups including ADF and FRC, both of which have declared anti-LGBT hate-groups by SPLC, and another, FotF which Dobson remains most closely affiliated with today, has carefully avoided the use of "known falsehoods" that earned the distinction of anti-LGBT "hate-group" for ADF and FRC, but only barely. In doing so, Dobson has managed to protect his beloved tax-free status) he has managed to avoid the hate-group distinction for himself and the organizations he continues to work directly with by knowing what NOT to say including outright lies, even though he and FotF remain enemies of equality without doubt. (see http://www.freedomforallamericans.org/eye-on-the-opposition-enemies-of-equality/ for more)
With luck, we may see Congress finally passing the Equality Act which includes LGBT Americans as covered. But even without that passing, the fact that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has already found that Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act forbids sexual orientation discrimination on the job because it's a form "sex" discrimination, which is explicitly forbidden by existing laws. The main challenge is that this runs counter to the rulings of several circuit courts because Congress has repeatedly refused to add "sexual orientation" to employment protections, so we can count on continued litigation on this matter until Congress acts appropriately.
But Mr. Dobson is becoming a fossil. Now at age 80, he's no longer the future or even the present, but the past. I'm just so happy that he's gotten to see some important undoings of his hateful work, including the gutting of DOMA in 2013 and the subsequent Obergefell decision in 2015 which overturned the last remaining vestige of the hateful DOMA law. I hope continued legal progress for LGBT Americans is sufficient to have him eventually pass away as a very unhappy man.
