A doctor pushing homophobic junk science whines about discrimination

From overseas comes a possibly soon-to-be religious right cause celebre:

Dr Hans-Christian Raabe claimed he had been “sacrificed on the altar of political correctness” but the Home Office said he had been fired because he failed to mention the controversial work in interviews. The Manchester GP is a member of the Maranatha Community, a Christian movement which believes homosexuality can be cured.

He was appointed to the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) last month, which is an unpaid, three-year post.

The Home Office said he was asked in interviews for the post whether there was anything about his professional or personal history that could cause embarrassment to the government or the advisory panel and did not mention the work.

Dr Raabe is a medical co-ordinator of the Council for Health and Wholeness (CHW), a Christian organisation based within the Maranatha Community.

But the papers he wrote against homosexuality was more than embarrassing, they were inaccurate:

In briefing documents from 2005 written by Dr Raabe for the CHW, homosexuality is described as “destructive” and is associated with disease and drug use.

One states: “The media and the gay movement portray the homosexual lifestyle as happy, healthy and fulfilled. However, the homosexual lifestyle is associated with a large number of very serious physical and emotional health consequences.”

It adds: “A high proportion of homosexual men engage in a destructive lifestyle, for example contracting HIV/Aids or other STIs, and develop addictions to drugs or alcohol. There is a higher burden of depression, [and] attempted or completed suicide among the ‘gay population’.”

Another paper, co-authored by Dr Raabe, claimed: “While the majority of homosexuals are not involved in paedophilia, it is of grave concern that there is a disproportionately greater number of homosexuals among paedophiles and an overlap between the gay movement and the movement to make paedophilia acceptable.”
It also stated: “Despite the impression given by the media, the actual number of homosexuals is quite small. Essentially all surveys show the number of homosexuals to be only 1-3 per cent of the population.”

Raabe's nonsense  in the first paper sounds like it sprang the mind of the Family Research Council's Peter Sprigg.

Sprigg pushed the same opinion about lgbts. However, he came to his conclusion by amplifying research about lgbts and negative behaviors while omitting the part of the research which placed the blame on homophobia for the negative behaviors.

Furthermore, Raabe's attempt to connect homosexuality and pedophilia is an old religious right claim derived from discredited researcher Paul Cameron. However, American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Child Psychiatrists and the Child Welfare League of America, all say that the homosexuality and pedophilia are not linked.

Raabe's whine about discrimination enforces what's wrong with Christianity today:

“I have been discriminated against because of my opinions and beliefs which are in keeping with the teaching of the major Churches. This sets a dangerous precedent: Are we saying that being a Christian is now a bar to public office?’

He is inaccurate here and badly so. While there is nothing wrong with his personal religious beliefs regarding homosexuality, we aren't talking about religious beliefs but a proliferation of bad information under the guise of Christianity.

It's important that this distinction is made. Unfortunately those of us who speak out against religious right distortions sometimes allow this distinction to slide, thereby making it seem that those who are called to the carpet for spreading lies about the lgbt community are the "victims" of supposed anti-Christian discrimination.

Raabe's case demonstrates just how dangerous this faux pas can be.

Know Your LGBT History - The Streets of San Francisco

Here is something from the waaaaaaaayback machine.

The Streets of San Francisco was a 70s police drama starring the late Karl Malden and Michael Douglas before he became a huge star.

It was an interesting show with very well-written scripts. And the following clip is from the episode Masks of Death. In the episode, John Davidson portrays a famous female impersonator whose schizophrenia is leading him to murder men.

As this clip shows, Davidson's performance was riveting. Actual female impersonator, the very talented Jim Bailey provided the voice but Davidson brings the pathos:

When a rabid wolf (Michelle Malkin) defends a homophobic chicken

I hadn't written about the Chick-Fil-A controversy nor had I made any actions regarding it, other than refusing to eat at Chick-Fil-A.

But since a certain rabid columnnist - Michele Malkin -  is trying to distort the situation, I figure why not jump in.

Here is the tale:

It's been discovered that Chick-Fil-A has ties to anti-gay advocates, including the National Organization for Marriage. According to the New York Times:

. . .the company’s operators, its WinShape Foundation and the Cathy family have given millions of dollars to a variety of causes and programs, including scholarships that require a pledge to follow Christian values, a string of Christian-based foster homes and groups working to defeat same-sex marriage initiatives.

It also owns a retreat center.

According to Jeremy Hooper from Goodasyou.org:

. . . this is the same retreat center that hosts an annual Marriage Comission seminar, featuring invited guests like Maggie Gallagher, Jennifer Roback Morse, Focus on the Family president Jim Daly, and many more who fight in the public square against equality for gay people. A seminar where Chick-Fil-A higher ups both speak and receive personal shout outs (see videos of that here). At a retreat that was born out of Chick-Fil-A profits: Profits you contribute to anytime you eat at one of the chain's many locations.

This retreat center explicitly bans lgbts.

So is this fair? Of course it is. Chick-Fil-A is a private company and has the right to do what it wants.

But - and herein lies the rub -  lgbts also have a right to decide where NOT to spend our money. Furthermore we and our allies have a right to make a stink in regards to a company who wants us to buy its product, but not afford us respect.

However, in a recently syndicated column, conservative Michelle Malkin makes us sound like jackbooted thugs. Of course she should know the true definition of the term based some of her blog fans.

In this case, she is way off the mark - which is saying a lot for her. She whines that lgbts are undertaking mob type practices and actually accuses The New York Times of running a hit piece on Chick-Fil-A.

This is because The New York Times had the "audacity" to look at the issue in an objective manner, garnering opinions from both sides.

No doubt this confuses Malkin, seeing that her definition of good news coverage is probably Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, or Laura Ingraham huffing and puffing on Fox News and interrupting those who lodge a different viewpoint from conservative talking points. After all, Malkin is a "contributor" there too.

The irony of Malkin's silly piece is that it ran on the phony news site One News Now, which is owned by the American Family Association. The American Family Association has made a name for itself by boycotting businesses, including Pepsi, Home Depot, and McDonald's.

In other words, Malkin wouldn't even have some of the audience she does now if it weren't for boycotts.

I doubt, however that she will appreciate the irony of the situation.

I think irony is a word lost on Malkin (much like other words such as integrity, truth, accuracy, etc. etc.)

Anti-gays activists not required to show proof anymore, they just lie

Editor's note - Check out the post below this one written late last night. Apparently while Ugandan police have a suspect in the murder of David Kato, those on the right are gloating about it.

Probably the poorest article I have ever read on the anti-gay One News Now is the following regarding the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)'s recent "No Name-Calling Week."

Rebecca Burgoyne, research analyst with California Family Council, tells One News Now that children across The Golden State are being indoctrinated with a pro-homosexual message. She maintains that the Obama administration and homosexual lobbyists are advancing an agenda that silences religious speech and the rights of parents.

"For many years, maybe a decade or so, gay activists in California have been making a big to-do about 'bullying' because of sexual orientation -- or even perceived sexual orientation," she explains. And the term "bullying," she argues, has become the elementary-level word for "hate speech."

And do you want to know Burgoyne's proof of this? The following:

In an article published on her group's website, Burgoyne notes that a young adult book featured during the week is The Misfits. The book, authored by an open homosexual, normalizes same-sex attraction, one character being an "openly homosexual seventh-grader who sees nothing wrong with being attracted to the boy who sits next to him in class."

The CFC research analyst contends that through such events as "No Name-Calling Week," homosexual activists are seeking to make same-sex attractions acceptable to young children -- while at the same time silencing the voice of other viewpoints.

You ever get the feeling that some supposed experts on the right are initially given trigger words designed to induce rage and concern in their audiences in lieu of facts?

Suspect in David Kato's murder pulling 'gay panic' card, right-wing gloats

There is now a suspect in the murder of Ugandan activist David Kato. What's more, he seem to be pulling an old anti-gay card, i.e. the "gay panic" defense:

A man whom police arrested yesterday on allegations of killing David Kato, a human rights activist, has reportedly told police that the deceased coerced him into sodomy.

. . .Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the suspect had been hiding in Nakabago village, Mukono District. “It is true the suspect has been arrested but we need to record his statement first before giving a formal statement,” Ms Nabakooba said yesterday. But a police source, who preferred anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the press, said the suspect confessed to killing Kato because he was reportedly tired of engaging in homosexual practices.

“We have taken him to Mukono Magistrate’s Court to record an extrajudicial statement,” the source said. “He told us that he killed Kato after he failed to give him a car, a house and money he promised as rewards for having sex with him,” the source said.

. . . The suspect allegedly told the police he got tired of having sex with Kato but the latter would not have any of his excuses. “The suspect said he left the bedroom, went to a store and picked a hammer which he used to hit him [Kato] while he was still in bed,” the source said. The death of Kato was condemned by the international community as an attack on the gay community.

Doesn't this man's claims remind you of the initial claims of Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, the murderers of Matthew Shepard?

Oh he hit on us.

We were so upset because that homosexual was making advances upon us.

We felt threatened.

In other words, it's the old tired story again - i.e. the dirty nasty fa@!* got what he deserved because he wouldn't take no for an answer.

Meanwhile, some on the right seem to be taking this moment to engage in a bit of unrestrained, un-Christian, and HIGHLY improvable gloating.

Protests loom over National Prayer Breakfast

I have to hand it to GetEqual this time. In spite of my differences with their past protests, the one at the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday morning is right on and if I was there, I would be protesting with them:

On Thursday, February 3, GetEQUAL -- a national direct action lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization -- in partnership with multiple LGBT and human rights organizations will host a “Breakfast Without Bigotry” protest outside of the National Prayer Breakfast. The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual event, keynoted by the President and attended by many politicians and business leaders, that is organized by a secretive religious group called "The Family" and is tied to the Ugandan lawmaker who authored the “Kill the Gays” bill in the Ugandan legislature.

In front of the Washington Hilton Hotel (1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW) from 6:00am – 8:00am (ET), civil rights activists, faith leaders, human rights organizers, and LGBT advocates will gather during the National Prayer Breakfast to ask that both Democratic and Republican Members of Congress and our President stand against the hatred and bigotry that the National Prayer Breakfast organizers have promoted worldwide. Groups joining GetEQUAL in this event include the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Unitarian Universalist Association, Soulforce, and others. (An updated list will be available at www.getequal.org on the day of the event.)

In the wake of the murder of Ugandan gay activist, David Kato, and the pending deportation of Brenda Namigadde from the UK back to Uganda, organizations across the country are uniting to make sure that “The Family” is exposed for their influence on world affairs, including the annihilation of LGBT people worldwide. "History has proven time and again that the kind of hatred, bigotry, and prejudice promoted by 'The Family' cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. 'The Family' already has blood on its hands, and must be stopped before it can kill again in even greater numbers. Uganda today serves as a lethal preview of what 'The Family' hopes to accomplish worldwide," said Michael Dixon, a lead organizer for GetEQUAL DC.

In addition, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has called on President Obama and all members of Congress not to attend the breakfast tomorrow morning:

"The National Prayer Breakfast uses the attendance of elected leaders to give the Fellowship greater credibility and facilitate its networking and fundraising," said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. "President Obama and members of Congress should not legitimatize this shadowy group with ties to scandal-ridden politicians and hateful and discriminatory positions against gays." Sloan continued, "It is all the more important that American political leaders avoid this event in light of the murder of prominent Ugandan gay activist David Kato."

The Fellowship, also known as "The Foundation" and "The Family," is run by Doug Coe, a spiritual advisor to some government officials, who uses the organization to push his brand of Christianity. The Fellowship owns and operates the infamous C Street House, a congressional residence and meeting place on Capitol Hill that has been a frequent haunt of some ethically-challenged elected officials identified by CREW, including Sen. John Ensign (R-NV).

. . . Members of the Fellowship pushed for anti-gay legislation in Uganda that made homosexuality a capital offense. Just last month, prominent activist David Kato was murdered in Uganda. Much of the wave of anti-gay sentiment can be linked to the promotion of anti-gay policies by American evangelicals.

Most likely President Obama and other members of Congress will  still be attending this breakfast. It would be nice if Obama took the time to give a little hell to these folks over their past actions.

Oh well, one can dream.

But the main point is that attention is slowly but surely growing about this awful group (The Family) and their ties to that awful situation in Uganda which claimed the life activist David Kato.

A USA Today article gives more details:

This year, lawmakers, clergy, power brokers and diplomats will break bread under a disturbing pall cast by the Jan. 26 murder of David Kato, a well-known gay activist who was bludgeoned to death in his home in Kampala. Kato had been targeted by a Ugandan newspaper in a front-page article identifying him and dozens of other Ugandans as "known homos" under the headline, "Hang Them."

While a number of high-profile prayer breakfast and Fellowship participants have repudiated the proposed Ugandan law, many human rights activists and other critics nonetheless remain convinced of the Fellowship's role in catalyzing support for the law.

The Fellowship, for its part, keeps a low profile. Its participants and leadership generally shun the media and the group maintains no official website, membership roster or official spokesperson.

You all can run but you can't hide. God don't like ugly, even if it's done in His name.

Hat tip to Americablog Gay and Pam's House Blend.

Told ya! Religious right begins religious whitewashing of Pennsylvania campus incident

That didn't take long at all.

Yesterday, I wondered how long it would take before some on the religious right began exploiting an incident in which a campus police officer in Pennsylvania got into trouble for refusing to do his job.

This morning, One News Now and the Alliance Defense Fund demonstrates how they are attempting to manipulate the case:

A U.S. appeals court has heard oral arguments in a case involving a policeman who refused to carry out his chief's orders to remove a Christian pro-life group from of a college campus.

In April 2007, a small group of Christians was peacefully demonstrating on the grounds of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, sharing their beliefs about moral issues like abortion. Meanwhile, a much larger group of protesters who loudly opposed the pro-life message led the KU president and campus police chief to insist the Christian group leave campus. But the officer on the scene, Corporal Steven Armbruster, refused the order.

"Just because someone has a pro-life message doesn't subject them to arrest," contends Tom Marcelle, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF). "It took great courage for the officer to uphold his duty to protect the Constitution and not violate the demonstrators' First Amendment rights."

Please bear in mind that while the article claims that the "group of Christians" were peacefully demonstrating, they didn't give the name of this group. And I think that is intentional. The group in question, Repent America, has a reputation of causing disruptive protests, getting arrested, and then suing in court about how their "First Amendment Rights" were violated.

Furthermore, the article doesn't even give the university's side of the story, i.e. Repent America was asked to leave because it didn't obtain permission to protest on campus. Also, the One News Now article omitted the reasons why Armbruster's case was initially dismissed:

His initial lawsuit, contending that the disciplinary action against him violated his free-speech and due-process rights, was dismissed last year by U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones II.

Jones ruled that Armbruster had refused the chief's order while serving in his official capacity as an officer, and so could not claim the university had violated his First Amendment rights.

Jones also rejected a second claim that the university violated Armbruster's "right to refuse to violate others' constitutional rights."

"Based on this court's research, over the past 30 years, no [higher court] has held such a right exists," Jones wrote.

The fact of the matter is this - Armbruster was an employee of the university and as such had a job to do. He deliberately decided on his own not to do his job and suffered the consequences - which was nothing more than a five day suspension without pay and a disciplinary letter.

However, should Armbruster somehow prevail - and he really shouldn't - perhaps it would be a good idea for lgbt students and their allies to start protesting Liberty University - which is affiliated with the Alliance Defense Fund.

Are lgbt groups going to be next on right-wing entrapment tour?

Today we have just learned that Planned Parenthood nearly became the victims of an entrapment launched by the same bunch of right-wing activist who brought down the community group ACORN.

Apparently the method of sending someone in talking about prostitution and underaged sex on heavily edited tapes didn't work this time.

However that didn't seem to stop religious right groups from trying to salvage something out of the debacle by attacking Planned Parenthood even after the phony sting exploded in the face of its creators.

And don't think this embarrassment will stop some right-wing activists from targeting lgbt groups, either.

It isn't paranoia nor is it farfetched to think that someone will be sooner or later be visiting lgbt centers - preferably ones dealing lgbt youth - and attempt to entrap workers and volunteers much like they tried with Planned Parenthood and ACORN.

And we can count on this nonsense being filmed for tapes which will later be heavily edited.

And I am also sure that we can count on religious right groups like the Family Research Council, religious right spokespeople like Peter LaBarbera, and right-leaning Congressional leaders such as Steve King or Michele Bachmann to conveniently denounce said footage and demand action before an investigation can take place. An investigation, mind you, which will most likely lead to the discovery that the tapes have been doctored and the evidence against targeted groups is faulty at best.

My suggestion would be for Planned Parenthood and law enforcement officials to see if they can prosecute these people to the fullest extent of the law.

And for lgbt groups to watch their backs. We know those on the other side of the spectrum sometimes don't play fair.

And now we know that they don't care who is aware of this fact.

Family Research Council now lying about the box office success of lgbt movies

The motion picture awards season is upon us and naturally those who take such an interest in such things are highly interested in who will win the lion's share of honors.

Not so for Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council. To him, it's all about standing against the so-called conspiracy to "recruit" into Americans into debauchery.

And he is now claiming that the box office is on his side in this matter:

The president of the Family Research Council says Hollywood's biggest flop may be its own ticket sales.

In a recent FRC podcast, Tony Perkins points out that people are not going to as many movies these days -- and who can blame them, he asks.

"As far as Hollywood is concerned, it's not art if it doesn't offend," he opines. "The biggest winners in last week's Golden Globe Awards were shows like Black Swan, Glee, and The Kids Are All Right -- and their whole purpose is pushing a liberal political agenda."

Perkins says while that may be how producers define success, box-office figures indicate clearly that audiences see things differently. "The Kids Are All Right, which is the story of two lesbians raising a family, came in 113th in ticket sales," he notes. "Toy Story 3, last year's box-office winner, made 21 times more money than Kids did."

The first inclination of course is to tell Perkins to chill out because these are only movies - except for Glee, which is a television show - but far be it from me to point out yet again how deceptive Perkins is being.

Perkins is accurate about Toy Story 3. It was last year's box office champ and did make a lot of money.  According to Box Office Mojo, the exact domestic total was $415,004,880 from a budget of $200 million. Its worldwide gross is $1,063,161,943

On its opening weekend in June - during the summer box office season, it was shown in over 4,000 theaters. Furthermore, Toy Story 3 was a continuation of a highly successful movie series - i.e. Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

And I haven't even begun talking about its promotion.

By contrast The Kid Are Alright was a movie which has made worldwide total $29,365,490 on a budget of $4 million. It was given limited release on July 9, opening at seven theatres. During its time at the box office, the most theatres it was ever played at was 994.

In terms of hype and promotion, comparing it to Toy Story 3 is like comparing apples and oranges.

But since Perkins and the Family Research Council have lied about so many other things, why should anyone be surprised about how unashamedly they lie about this issue?

Where are the black lgbt characters on television?

The Root has just come out an exceptional article talking about the absence of lgbt of color character on television.

Don't get me wrong - I love the visibility of lgbt television characters, but I wouldn't mind seeing some folks like myself. And not just for my own desires. There are million of young lgbts of color who also need that self-esteem which only comes from seeing positive portrayals:

To let Entertainment Weekly tell it, we are in the midst of a "gay revolution."

According to the magazine's latest cover story, Fox's ever popular series Glee -- and in particular its young yet openly gay characters, like Kurt Hummel, the high-note-hitting, fashion-loving teen played by Chris Colfer -- is "changing hearts, minds and Hollywood."

Joining in the praise is Newsweek, which celebrated the musical comedy-drama series by branding it "the gayest show in the history of network TV." In the Newsweek interview, columnist and anti-gay-bullying advocate Dan Savage echoed these sentiments and praised Glee and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "Really, when it comes to gay rights, there's two wars going on," Savage opined. "The first war is political. But the culture war is over. Between Glee and Ellen and how integrated and accepted LGBT adults are, that's done."

I would have joined in on the celebration going on at Newsweek and Entertainment Weekly, but I stopped believing in fairy tales after finding my mama's signature on "Santa's receipt" some 20 years ago. While I applaud Glee's efforts and adore DeGeneres for simply being alive, Hummel's high notes and DeGeneres' nonthreatening dance moves have aided only a portion of the gay population.

Many gays of color certainly don't see themselves in this revolution. Though we are seeing a lot more gay faces on TV, many of them are of the same ilk. And are we really challenging the tolerance levels of Americans that much by asking them to accept versions of gay people that they've long grown accustomed to seeing?

SNL in trouble over nasty transgender skit and other Monday midday news briefs

GLAAD Slams SNL for 'Estro-Maxx' Ad Mocking Transgender Women - This situation has caused a bit of controversy in the lgbt community with some of us decrying the skit and others saying that we are too serious. I'm in the camp of those who decry the skit. Don't get me wrong - I like blue humor. But this skit made me feel uncomfortable. I didn't find it humorous at all.

And I think some on the other side of this issue are suffereing from a bit of forgetfulness. Remember it wasn't that long ago when gays and lesbians had to raise hell because some portrayals of us on television were evil. And it's not a matter of not having a sense of humor. It's about a lack of power. It's rare that our transgender brothers and sisters see a positive portrayal of themselves on television, so naturally when something like this comes out, they are going to raise hell.

It's no different than when the lesbian community raised hell in the 70s over the Police Woman episode,
Flowers of Evil which featured three lesbians brutally murdering the residents of a retirement home they oversaw.

Or when I have to see portrayals of black gay men in
African-American movies and television - places where you very rarely see us.

Here comes possible new victim of the 'radical homosexual agenda'

I want to get this piece out before those on the right have a chance to use this man as their new "cause celebre" against the so-called radical gay agenda:

An eastern Pennsylvania university police officer is asking a federal appeals court to rule that he had a right to refuse an order to disperse anti-abortion and anti-gay demonstrators on campus almost four years ago.

Cpl. Steve Armbruster said he was given what he considered an unconstitutional order to eject 15 members of the evangelical group Repent America from the Kutztown University campus in April 2007. He was relieved of his duties and later suspended for five days without pay.

A federal judge last year rejected his lawsuit, and The Philadelphia Inquirer said the 3rd U.S. Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard his appeal last week.

Students and university officials said the group showed up unexpectedly to preach against homosexuality and was confronted by hundreds of students. A judge later dismissed disorderly conduct charges against members but criticized them for demonstrating on the campus without the university's permission.

Armbruster contended that the order by the university president and the campus police chief would violate the group's civil rights and subject him to liability.

U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones II Jones ruled last year that Armbruster was serving in his official capacity, so his rights were not violated. He also rejected Armbruster's position that he had a right to refuse to violate the constitutional rights of others.

You get that? A group - Repent America - showed up unannounced on a college campus and began to protest. Since they had no permission to do so, university police were called in to disperse them. However, a member of the said police refused to do his job for his own reasons. He was suspended without pay but is trying to sue.

Seems to me that if you don't do the job you were assigned without a good reason - and his reason in regards to the First Amendment was not adequate - you should deal with the consequences.

No doubt if  they retell this story for their own purposes, religious right groups will probably mock up the details so to create more sympathy for Armbuster. They did so in past cases of former religious right cause celebres who either got fired or into trouble because they didn't adhere to very fair rules regarding conduct and then chose to make the controversy into a religion vs. homosexuality issue. Cause celebres such as:

Peter Vadala,

Crystal Dixon,

Patricia Mauceri,

Jennifer Keeton and Julea Ward ,

and the group in the center of the controversy, Repent America - who is known for making unannounced nuisances of themselves and then whining about how their rights are being violated.

I can just see the spin now (God help us).

How to shut up the religious right and show lgbt love at the same time

I'm posting this because earlier today, some idiot tried to use the Peter LaBarbera-ish argument of citing pictures from subcultural events like Folsom Street Fair to make a ridiculous claim that lgbts are nasty and have no concept of love.

As this montage of pictures from the past demonstrate, that is a lie.

Sometimes it doesn't take a big argument to refute silly bullshit. Just a simple show of the truth will do.

Know Your LGBT History - Two looks at transgender characters in films

For my first Know Your LGBT history segment, I featured an episode of the long-running sitcom The Jeffersons in which one of the main characters deals with his friend's sexual reassignment surgery.

It was a groundbreaking episode in both subject and sensitivity. The motion picture industry during that time also dealt with members of the transgender community, but not with as much humor and definitely with little dignity.

And Justice For All (1979) is a popular movie in which Al Pacino plays a lawyer up against an insane legal system. It garnered several awards and is chiefly remembered for Pacino's out-of-control outburst at the end.

And why did Pacino's character freak out? Mostly because of how the judicial system treated his clients, like the transgender woman Ralph Agee (portrayed by Robert Christian). Homophobia leads Agee to be manipulated into committing a small crime and she is deathly afraid of going to jail. The following scene (which was hard for me to watch and even more difficult for me to post) demonstrates why. Agee comes on screen at 3:20. All I can say that it's not a pretty scene:

I might as well reveal what happens to Agee. Pacino's character promises her that she will not serve any jail time, but because of an emergency, calls on another lawyer to defend her. The lawyer screws everything up and Agee is sentenced to jail. Agee then commits suicide.

Fast forward to 2003 where, while things may not be how we want them, they are certainly better for lgbts. And an excellent HBO film demonstrates why.

Normal stars two-time Academy Award nominee and Emmy-award winning actor Tom Wilkinson who, on the night of his 25th anniversary, tells his wife (played by Jessica Lange - no slouch herself in the award department with two Oscars and an Emmy) that he is planning to transition into a woman.

This movie doesn't insult the audience as it tells the story of a man struggling to make changes in his life and his wife trying to support him while both are dealing with how their family and community handles it all. Again, folks are going to get mad at me for giving away the ending but I am happy to report that the family survives:

Normal received several awards including an Emmy for Best Make up as well as nominations for Wilkinson and Lange.

Homophobes try to disturb David Kato's funeral and other Friday midday news briefs

Brian Brown: 'I haven't actually seen the film, but...' - Who cares if Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage hasn't really seen the movie he dares to criticize. Homophobic murder in Uganda is not about DOMA or ENDA

The reverberations is still being felt after the assassination of Ugandan lgbt activist David Kato.

The following is a clip of an interview with Kato in which he expressed fear for his life because of the homophobic climate in Uganda:

And now a short message to my lgbt brothers and sisters in America. Some of us have reacted negatively to President Obama's statement condemning Kato's murder. Some have called his statement useless.

Others have said that if the Obama Administration really believed the words in the statement, it would stop defending DOMA in court or push for ENDA.

Folks, this isn't the time for that. This is not about lgbts in America. This is not about DOMA and ENDA. To bring them up is highly insensitive in that it highjacks the issue, which should be about lgbts facing persecution in Uganda.

Whether or not we like President Obama's actions in regards to lgbt rights, this is a time in which we are going to have to push whatever anger we have to the background and stand with him in condemning Kato's murder and the continued dehumanization of lgbts in Uganda.

This doesn't mean that we should remain silent. And we shouldn't. You see it's OUR job to make sure people don't forget Kato nor other lgbts in Uganda. It's our job to make people never forget the simple fact that homophobia is not good - religion based or otherwise.

Homophobia is hate, pure and simple.
