Know Your LGBT History - 'The Fabulous Gays' of Steambath

Steambath was a 1970 Off-Broadway play written by Bruce Jay Friedman which tells the story of a man who dies and discovers that the afterlife is in fact a steamroom.

In 1973, PBS aired a production of this play which featured the late Bill Bixby and Valerie Perrine. That production is famous because Perrine became the first female to have her breasts displayed intentionally on network television.

Perrine's nudity was such a hallmark that the inclusion of two gay characters (played by Neil J. Schwartz and Patrick Spohn) seem to be an afterthought.

 That's a real shame . . .  or maybe not as you can see by this clip of their high-stepping performance of "Let Me Entertain You."

Of course I don't consider this clip offensive. I don't necessarily consider it positive either. It's just there.

And it is a performance that I bet you will never see done on Glee. (Editor's note - proceed with caution because there is male nudity):

Tony Perkins comments on SPLC press conference

Today is the beginning of the dreary religious right "Values Voters" conference which will see - amongst other things - GOP presidential candidates mingling with folks who seem to think that God gave them the patent on the words "morality," "family," and "values."

In anticipation of this, the Southern Poverty Law Center and Truth Wins Out will be holding a press conference today highlighting the venomous anti-gay rhetoric of two groups involved in this conference - the Family Association and the American Family Association.

The press conference is the latest salvo in very public fight between SPLC and various "values" organizations designated as hate groups by the organization because of their tendency to demonize the gay community through propaganda, inaccurate rhetoric, or junk science.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council weighed in on the SPLC's press conference:

Perkins said the SPLC news conference reflected an attempt to prevent free discussion of ideas and noted that he doesn’t show up at SPLC events to protest the civil rights organization’s beliefs.

“Southern Poverty Law Center is obviously desperate to try to shut down public debate,” he said.

Perkins is again casting FRC and AFA as the victims, which is what he and others affiliated with these groups have been doing since last year when the controversy began. However, SPLC is not seeking to shut down anyone. If anything, the organization wants to have a conversation as to why the FRC uses junk science - such as the work of the discredited researcher Paul Cameron (a man who claims that gays stuff gerbils up their rears) - to demonize the gay community.

Or why the organization has made the following other inaccurate claims:

• Homosexuals molest children at far higher rates than heterosexuals.

• Same-sex parents harm children.

• Homosexuals don’t live nearly as long as heterosexuals.

It would be in FRC's best interest to answer these charges. However  there will be no conversation as long as FRC double down on the "we are being attacked because of our faith" and "SPLC is trying to shut down the debate" whines.

The organization has YET to come out with a detailed response to SPLC's charges even after claiming earlier this year that it would.

The Southern Poverty Law Center will hold a press conference this Friday, Oct. 7, to release a report on the Family Research Council (FRC) and American Family Association (AFA), two groups that spread false propaganda that demonizes the LGBT community. The FRC is hosting the annual Values Voter Summit this weekend Washington, where many prominent public officials will be speaking. The AFA is a major co-sponsor.

The New York Times piece goes on to say “The conference, from Friday to Sunday in Washington, is sponsored by the Family Research Council, the American Family Association” that would be us, “and other evangelical Christian groups. It aims to energize social conservatives and test the fidelity of the candidates.” All true. “The conference planners have obliged Mr. Romney, scheduling him to speak right before Bryan Fischer, who is chief spokesman for the family association and is known for his strident remarks on homosexuality, gay rights, Muslims and Mormons.” Now again, when you just tell the truth, that’s all I’ve done, I’ve done nothing but tell the truth about homosexuality, about gay rights, about Muslims and Mormons. That’s all I’ve done. I didn’t make anything up; I have just told the truth. You tell the truth as far as the left is concerned, that makes you strident. In fact my comments, my speech, is gonna be followed by a panel of same-sex marriage opponents. And then the New York Times guy talks about People For the American Way calling on especially Mr. Romney to publicly disassociate themselves from Mr. Fischer and his quote “unmitigated bigotry.” So once again, tell the truth, as far as the left concerns, “unmitigated bigotry.”

Meanwhile, little ole me awaits the entire thing like a ravenous individual on Thanksgiving.

Or better yet, a bloodthirsty warrior who is running low on his "kill quota."

As many of you know, the religious right have been trying to stop a law in California - SB48 (The Fair Education Act) - which revised an existing law and adds the gay community to a list of under-represented cultural and ethnic groups that are covered in textbooks and other instructional materials in schools.

These folks seek to repeal this law via referendum and they have also been stooping to nasty levels, such a allegedly lying to get signatures.

But the following graphic takes the cake. It is a part of  a Powerpoint presentation - which according to the anti-gay group the Family Research Council - should be shown in churches:

Major News Outlets Still Relying On Hate Group Leader For 2012 Commentary - I personally think that this is good news. A good target is one which has a big red mark on its back. I mean that in a strictly figurative "let's not waste good opportunities to show the world that the Family Research Council is a hate group" type of way.

Religious right cause celebre sacrificing integrity of her name for case?

The case of Julea Ward demonstrates how not only money can push against truth but also how the religious right exploits potential cause celebres.

Last year, a federal judge, the Honorable George Caram Steeh, dismissed a case brought by grad student Julea Ward against Eastern Michigan University. The college expelled her from its graduate program for refusing to counsel a gay client:

"The university had a rational basis for adopting the ACA Code of Ethics into its counseling program, not the least of which was the desire to offer an accredited program," Steeh said in a 48-page opinion.

"Furthermore, the university had a rational basis for requiring its students to counsel clients without imposing their personal values.

"In the case of Ms. Ward, the university determined that she would never change her behavior and would consistently refuse to counsel clients on matters with which she was personally opposed due to her religious beliefs -- including homosexual relationships."

The judge said Ward's "refusal to attempt learning to counsel all clients within their own value systems is a failure to complete an academic requirement of the program."

Backed up with religious right money and pull (in this case the Alliance Defense Fund),  Ward is now appealing the decision.

Personally I am of the belief that if Ward wants to receive certification from Eastern Michigan University, she needs to follow the university's program. If she doesn't want to counsel gay patients, perhaps it would be better for her to seek a college which would accommodate her.

But something about this entire thing bothers me. It's a seemingly small thing but it sticks in my mind. Her name is Julea Ward. It is how she was referred to in past court documents and the media.

However, in this re-pushing of her case, several religious right sources - one being the National Organization for Marriage - are referring to her as Julie.

To some people, that difference may seem trite, but to me - a member of an ethnic group who has seen and had to deal with folks coming in trying to convert things about our heritage in a poor excuse to gain appeal to a wider base - the name change is bothersome.

Could it be that the folks handling Ms. Ward's case decided that eliminating the ethnicity in her name would help widen her appeal?

If this is so, perhaps Ms. Ward should stop worrying about Eastern Michigan University and start worrying about those claiming to be her friends.

People for the American Way's Right Wing Watch has compiled the best - or rather the worst - comments coming from the key sponsors and speakers at this weekend's Values Voters Summit.

Please bear in mind that these folks make their money by claiming that America is on a "moral decline" and it's up to them to pull the country back.

You tell me what's worse - the fact that there are some people who actually believe that mess or the fact that several Republican presidential candidates will be in attendance:



What would Jesus do indeed? Would He actually be proud to have these characters using His name for their madness? I think not.

So why does this commercial scare Maggie Gallagher, Tony Perkins and the rest of the religious right? Simple. Because it shows truth. It shows that the loving and raising of children is not something strictly owned by the heterosexual community or a stereotypical nuclear family.

And it proves that all of the money, lies, and propaganda can't hide basic truth regarding the gay community.

SPLC calls out those associating with anti-gay hate groups

The Southern Poverty Law Center has just come out with a video with a simple message for public figures speaking at the right-wing Values Voters Summit held this weekend - Stop associating with hate groups:



You can't get more succinct and to the point than that. I think the lgbtq community and our allies need to spread not only this video but also other SPLC-related information.

The SPLC has been doing an excellent job calling out these anti-gay hate groups.

Riddle me this. What do you do when your defense of an archaic law is revealed as faulty and containing junk science.

Well if you are House of Representative Speaker John Boehner, you increase the dollar amount of this defense. From Think Progress:

Earlier this year, Speaker John Boehner’s (R) office announced that American taxpayers would pay former Bush Solicitor General Paul Clement to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act — at a cost of $520 per hour of legal work. Clement’s original contract, however, included a $500,000 cap on the amount Clement could charge the United States to help protect discrimination. Less than six months later, Clement appears to have blown through that cap, and the House GOP now anticipates that he will take another $1 million from the American people:

The [House of Representatives] agrees to pay [Clement's law firm] for all services to be rendered pursuant to this Agreement a sum not to exceed $750,000.00. It is further understood and agreed that, effective October 1, 2011, the aforementioned $750,000 cap may be raised from time to time up to, but not exceeding, $1.5 million, upon written notice of the [House] to the [firm].

Clement is one of the nation’s top litigators, so Boehner has certainly not spared any expense in ensuring that unconstitutional discrimination against gay couples receives the best legal team available. The same cannot be said, however, for programs that actually benefit the American people. At the same time that the House GOP is writing enormous checks to keep anti-gay discrimination alive, they are pushing sharp cuts to education, job training and health care.

And what exactly is Boehner getting for this defense? Let's spotlight the highlights - or rather lowlights - of Clement's DOMA defense thus far:

1. Clement tried to sneak in the testimony of former NOM chair Maggie Gallagher in a way which would have kept her from being cross-examined.

2. A professor cited by Clement in a brief defending DOMA, Lisa Diamond, complained that her work was being distorted.

3. Clement is also citing - in a second hand fashion - junk science from discredited researchers. In his defense of DOMA, Clement cites the work of Case Western Reserve University law professor George W. Dent, Jr.

But Dent's work - which Clement uses -  cited both Paul Cameron and George Rekers, two discredited researchers. Cameron has been censured or rebuked by several organizations for his bad methodology in his studies. He has published work which claimed, among other nauseating false things, that gays stuff gerbils up their rectums. (Editor's note-  the piece Cameron cited to make this claim - The Straight Dope - actually said that this claim was not true. Cameron dishonestly "flipped the script" to make it seem that The Straight Dope was affirming this claim.)

Rekers lost a lot of credibility for last year's scandal when he was caught coming from a European vacation with a "rentboy."

Also, Dent cited the work of Walter Schumm's study Children of Homosexuals More Apt To Be Homosexuals? A Reply to Morrison and to Cameron Based on an Examination of Multiple Sources of Data.

Schumm's study was criticized for using the same false methodology as Cameron's work. i.e. citing sources "from general-audience books about LGBT parenting and families, most of which are available on Amazon.com"

Furthermore, Dent cited a book called Straight & Narrow by Thomas E. Schmidt to make criticisms about gay health. However, Schmidt is not a credible researcher in the field of gay health. He is a professor of New Testament Greek at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and according to Rev. Mel White of the group Soulforce, Schmidt cited Cameron's discredited studies many times in Straight & Narrow (5th letter to Jerry Falwell.)

And last, but not least, Dent cited the work of the American College of Pediatricians. The American College of Pediatricians is not a credible organization, but an organization created to give credibility to junk science about the gay community. Last year, over 14,000 school district superintendents in the country were sent a letter by ACP inviting them to peruse and use information from a new site, Facts About Youth. The site claimed to present "facts" supposedly not tainted by "political correctness."  Of course these were not facts, but ugly distortions about the gay community, including:

Some gay men sexualize human waste, including the medically dangerous practice of coprophilia, which means sexual contact with highly infectious fecal wastes

Taking all of this into account, it is no wonder that the site Equality Matters raised speculation that Boehner's defense of DOMA may go the route of the Prop 8 case. That anti-gay law was overturned.

But I have a question for my fellow Americans - gay and straight. How does it feel to have over $1 million of your tax dollars wasted to prop up the work of a man who claims that gays stuff gerbils up their rectums?

If you feel like you're getting screwed, it ain't the gerbils who's doing it.

Family Research Council blames booing of gay soldier on Obama

Weeks after the booing of the gay soldier during the last Republican Presidential debate, the Family Research Council is finally weighing in on the incident. FRC head Tony Perkins said the following

As a young Marine I remember my First Sergeant telling me how he was greeted at the airport on his return to the United States by being spit upon and cursed by anti-war liberals that dominated the college campuses at the time. I strongly condemn any disrespectful behavior toward anyone who has honorably served our nation in uniform. But that is not what occurred at the debate. Anyone who saw the debate could clearly see that the audience was booing not the soldier, but the President's policy to use our military as political pawns to force acceptance of a homosexual lifestyle that is abhorrent to most. It is not conservatives who are spitting in the face of the military, it is the President and his liberal allies who are using our nation's brave men and women to advance their radical social policy agenda. 

First of all, the fact that it took FRC weeks to give a statement about this incident is a story in itself. FRC has never failed to give a rapid fire responses when talking about  its disagreements with the President's policy  - particularly that of DADT.

Secondly, leave it to FRC to lie (in this case rather badly) about the soldier being booed. Seems to me that even if you are only booing a policy that allows a gay soldier to serve openly and freely, you are disrespecting that soldier, i.e. the person who is putting his/her life on the line for your freedom.

Perkins's attempt to split hairs here is most un-Christian. But what we have come to expect from him and FRC. They only talk about being Christian. They have no idea what the concept of actually practicing what they preach entails.

NOM's tasteless comments about Rep. Polis's newborn son

There are times that the National Organization for Marriage is so anti-gay that it burns, such as the post on its blog regarding the birth of Congressman Jared Polis's  newborn son:

A simple congratulations would have been nice. Or, since the organization does not agree with same-sex couples raising children (or existing in dignity), maybe a little silence would have been in order.

We can all predict what's going to happen next. Should NOM catch any flack from this, the organization will quickly whine about how it's being "persecuted," leaving many of us to wonder what ever happened to the good old days when "Christians" could make tasteless comments about newborns without reprisal.

Seems to me that a so-called moral organization shouldn't sound like bullies on the playground. That's what NOM comes across as here - bullies on a playground poking fun at a little boy for living in a same-sex household:

"You don't have a mother! You don't have a mother!"

Laura Ingraham proves the lack of integrity in some conservatives

 

Last week, I wrote how presidential candidate Mitt Romney is willing to sacrifice his integrity by sharing the stage at the religious right's upcoming "Values Voters" conference with Bryan Fischer, a man who publicly disrespected Romney's Mormon faith.

But apparently Romney isn't the only one who willing to sacrifice integrity to appear on a religious right stage. From the Family Research Council:

The most listened-to woman in political talk radio will be in front of a different microphone next week--the one at the sixth annual Values Voter Summit. FRC Action is proud to confirm that Laura Ingraham, the No. 1 best-selling author of five books (including her latest chart-topper, Of Thee I Zing) will be adding to the jam-packed line-up next Friday afternoon. Ingraham, a fan favorite, will join all seven major GOP candidates at the largest pro-family event in Washington

It is true that Ingraham is one of those "new breed" of conservatives - i.e. one who sacrifice the rambling but logical arguments of the late William F. Buckley for a type of fast food rendition of conservative points which are high on distortions and barking and low on accuracy.

But she also has a gay brother, Curtis, who she has been estranged with for many years. Apparently, however they reconciled. She said the following about him:

In the ten years since I learned my brother Curtis was gay, my views and rhetoric about homosexuality have been tempered, because I have seen him and his companion, Richard, lead their lives with dignity, fidelity and courage," she wrote. Curtis’ struggles to be with his partner in the hospital — he was allowed access only after claiming to be his “caretaker” — even made Ingraham consider the importance of same-sex marriage. "Knowing what they had been through together made it sound antiseptic, almost an insult," Ingraham wrote.

That comment was made in 1997. One must wonder what happened between then and now which would allow Ingraham to justify sharing a stage with folks who would strip her brother of his ability to live his life with "dignity, fidelity, and courage."

People like Bryan Fischer, whose brazen homophobia has been documented in so many places. I wonder how Ingraham feels about Fischer's homophobic comments regarding gays adopting children or gays and the Nazi Party.

And Fischer is just one of many at the confrerence.

Brian Brown  of NOM will be there. His organization sends out mailers accusing gays of  "corrupting" children.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council will be there. His organization employs a man - Peter Sprigg - who said that gays should be exported out of the United States. FRC has also been at the forefront of spreading junk science about the gay community.

Mat Staver of the Liberty Counsel will be there. His organization is suspected of taking a, shall we say, eyebrow raising role in keeping a lesbian - Janet Jenkins - away from her daughter.

Then there is Congressman Steve King (R-IA), who once said that gays wouldn't be discriminated against in employment if they didn't "flaunt" themselves.

 Maybe Ingraham has established some type of mental block. Maybe when she hears what these individuals say about gays, she tells herself "well they don't mean my brother, Curtis."

Uh girlfriend, they are talking about your brother Curtis. And  not because they know him.

They only know that he is gay and therefore is not deserving of any dignity at all.

And by your appearance at their conference, Laura, you are helping them rob him of that dignity.

Hell of a way to earn a paycheck and get notoriety, isn't it?

Bigot mad at government for acknowledging same-sex couples

Matt Barber of the right-wing Liberty Counsel is angry at President Obama and the Census Bureau:

A pro-family attorney says the U.S. Census Bureau's decision to include households headed by same-sex couples is just another attempt by the Obama administration to legitimize same-sex "marriage."

The 2010 census, which shows that about 20 percent of the estimated 646,464 homosexual couples in the country checked "husband" or "wife" boxes on their census forms, marked the first time the Bureau tracked information about same-sex "spouses." Matt Barber, vice president of Liberty Counsel Action, sees the report as another tactic of the radical homosexual activist lobby in its attempt to undermine the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

"This is another attempted chip-away at the Defense of Marriage Act and to gain full federal sanctioning and government recognition of counterfeit same-sex marriage," he contends.

That's right. Apparently the secret army for the "advancement of homosexuality" met at our secret headquarters (shaped like the famed Hall of Doom from Challenge of the Superfriends) and decided that the Census Bureau is the best place to push our supposed agenda.

I won't even comment about how stupid Barber's comments are. But I will say how they underscore how nasty and mean-spirited the man is.

Apparently in his world, we should ignore same-sex couples, which means no doubt we should ignore issues involving their families and their children.

Doesn't sound very Christian to me.

I think I like Barber better when he obsesses over "gay sex."
