May 10, 2011 - NOM exploiting children to stop gay marriage in New York - NOM puts out a commercial in New York repeating the variation of the "kindergartners are being taught about gay marriage" lie which was exposed by Politifact in February.
May 14, 2011 - Politifact gives NOM 'Pants on Fire' rating for lying - Politifact catches NOM lying yet again. This time it is about marriage equality in Rhode Island.
May 15, 2011 - Brian Brown reveals NOM's anti-gay game of divide and conquer - At a march against marriage equality in New York, NOM president Brian Brown repeats the lie that " . . . kids as young as kindergarten are taught in Massachusetts that their parents are bigots because they believe marriage is the union of a man and a woman."
May 16, 2011 - NOM - Homosexuals wants to destroy children's innocence through gay marriage - NOM sends out a flyer claiming that gay marriage will destroy the "innocence" of children.

June 28, 2011 - NOM astroturfed 'legal scholars' in New York - During its unsuccessful attempt to stop marriage equality in New York, NOM tried to make it seem that objective legal scholars were claiming that marriage equality in the state will negatively impact those who disagree with it. But NOM omits the fact that these scholars are not objective. They are all against marriage equality. And one of the scholars in question, Robert George, is presently the Chairman Emeritus of NOM.
And if those reasons aren't enough, Equality Matters has a huge breakdown of NOM's exploits which go way beyond simply "expressing Christian faith" or "defending traditional marriage." The following are just a few:

November 20, 2009 - Signer of Manhattan Declaration wanted to jail gays and lesbians - By signing an anti-gay document, The Manhattan Declaration, Gallagher and NOM affiliate themselves with people who want to jail lgbts.
February 1, 2010 - Maggie Gallagher commits 'sin of omission' to make case against marriage equality - Gallagher cites a study to bash gay marriage and gay parenting, even though the study had nothing to do with either concept.

June 14, 2010 - National Organization for Marriage: Gays Were Never Hunted Down and Murdered Like 'Jews, Christians, and Blacks' - NOM is found to be affiliated with Louis J. Marinelli during its failed summer for marriage tour. Amongst other things, Marinelli claims that gays want to molest children. When Marinelli's words became public, NOM claimed that the organization had no affiliation with Marinelli. However certain links posted as an update to the story demonstrated that NOM did have an affiliation with Marinelli. Editor's note - Marinelli disavowed his work with NOM.
June 28, 2010 - Message to Maggie Gallagher: associating with bigots does make you a bigot - NOM associates itself with another bigoted group, The Traditional Value Coalition. Amongst other things, TVC head Lou Sheldon has said that gays should be referred to as "sodomites."
July 27, 2010 - National Organization for Marriage needs to disavow its 'zany' followers - NOM not only has a problem with the homophobia of those in its ranks, but also those who support the group, particularly the guy with the poster of the hangman's nooses.
February 11, 2011 - PolitiFact catches anti-gay group NOM in a huge lie about gay marriage and children - Pultizer Prize-winning news site calls NOM out on a lie that gay marriage is being taught to kindergartners in Massachusetts.
February 17, 2011 - National Organization for Marriage called out AGAIN for distortive tactics - NOM commissions a misleading poll claiming that the majority of folks in Maryland oppose gay marriage. They are called out on it by a local columnist.

April 14, 2011 - NOM Rhode Island's Chris Plante: Gays' marriages 'turn children into little teacup dogs -- it's an accessory to put in my purse' - A NOM leader in Rhode Island, Chris Plante, makes an offensive remark about same-sex families.
April 15, 2011 - Maggie Gallagher shucks and jives her way through the DOMA hearing - During a Congressional hearing on the Defense of Marriage Act, Gallagher says that gays and lesbians make wonderful parents and she does not understand how her past statements can be construed a "condemnation" of gays and lesbians and their "parenting skills." However, Equality Matters (and myself) lists statements Gallagher has made in the past which were not so complimentary to the lgbt community.
Hopefully the Southern Poverty Law Center will take note. These efforts by NOM have nothing to do with morality or defending tradition, but rather demonizing the gay community through lies, fear tactics, and junk science.
NOM should be declared to be an anti-gay hate group.

Hey Alvin, do you know what the precise perimeters that SPLC employs in designating an org. an official hate-group? At the moment, NOM appears to be flagrantly tip-toeing around such rhetoric by quoting from such articles and authors holding such opinions; or, the members on NOM's board sem to write about it on their personal time, etc. What part does the writings of speech of a group's "board" have in their designation as an official hate group? or, must it be an official policy or statement from the group, or an official comment made by it's official talking-heads such as Maggie, Brian, and J. Ro.?

You know, all these groups are hate groups. A group that exists for the sole purpose of denying a class of people their rights is a hate group, whether they agitate, scream, insult, lie, advocate violence, or commit violence. They're all hate groups.
Alvin, it has just occured to me that, perhaps, NOM knows precisely what they are doing in partnering or citing these groups by giving to them what one can describe as a clout of credibility! Also, by citing and posting such vicious articles, they in turn directly give those anti-Gay views credibility even if they do not directly endorse them publicly, but rather tip-toe around them and post a money-quote to their Blog. So, one wonders how, in light of this, the SPLC cannot list them as an official hate-group?
Please, Alvin, be sure to keep in touch with the SPLC re: NOM's most vociferously beyond the pale activities, because until I mentioned NOM's claims linking marriage equality to pedophilia last month, they were unaware of it...
For crying out loud, how can the Ruth Institute (whose Pres. J. Ro. has always seemed unbalenced to me!) link to an article on their Block that says the following and still not be considered a hate-group?
"For them to say that opposition to same-sex marriage is causing psychological distress among lesbians and gays, I mean these guys have it completely backward, ' [Peter] LaBarbera contends. "The reality is that self-described homosexuals and lesbians, they do have psychological problems because homosexuality is a perversion."'"
Oh, and does the SPLC re: NOM and Ruth Inst. to be the same group, or different groups? t would be interesting to find that out...
Alvin -- Let's also not forget the fact NOM is demanding the *special* right to keep the list of everyone who donated to the campaigns secret, claiming that they would be harassed and face physical assault from "teh evul gayz"!
Question:
When you say "NOM astroturfed 'legal scholars' in New York", what do you mean by "astroturfed"?
I mean that they made up an argument that objective legal scholars claimed that marriage equality is going to cause problems for the state. these "objective" scholars either opposed marriage equality from the start, were affiliated with the Catholic Church, or in the case of Robert George, helped to found NOM.
Shawna -- An "astroturf" group is a fake grassroots organization.
Just like the artificial turf, to the casual eye it looks like a real advocacy group. However, in reality, the group is financed, staffed, and run by a special interest or a conglomerate.

Let's not forget how NOM is pumping up the animus and tension with the accusations that non-discrimination laws that protect LGBT are taking away religious liberties for others. This has been a frequent topic this year with NOM and is a hot topic on their blogs that brings on much anger with their followers.

Not to mention lying in the headlines of their tweets. I saw one that said "Lesbian Sex Book taught to middle schoolers". Upon reading the article, I was shocked to discover that it was actually a high school book. That, and the book is insanely well-reviewed and very popular in Japan, which, if nothing else, helps high schoolers learn about other cultures.

I'm guessing the SPLC will be listing NOM as a hate group pretty darn soon... they're probably gathering evidence as we speak. They tend to be cautious about their listings (and rightfully so, given the heat they took this last year for naming so many anti-gay groups to their hate group list) and want to be darn sure that they can defend their decision.

I am wondering why the SPLC has not yet named the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) as a hate group. Your Intelligence Report 140 (Winter 2010) called them out, but the summary missed a whole lot of egregious hatred from NOM.

Civil rights are human rights. NOM wants to not just prevent LGBT folks from obtaining equal rights, they'd like to lock up gays, hang them, execute them, or deport them. They spread falsehoods which have been debunked over and over and over.
