Peter LaBarbera's pitiful attack on the Southern Poverty Law Center

While George "daddy longstroke" Rekers continues to be hit by the hubris bus, our friend, Peter LaBarbera has renewed his attacks on the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Ever since the SPLC declared his Americans for Truth web site to be a hate site, LaBarbera has been scrambling to destroy SPLC's credibility.

And he thinks he found something.

In 2005, the organization mistaked him for discredited researcher Paul Cameron in its Intelligence Report, saying that it was he who was denounced by the American Psychological Association. So now, LaBarbera has jumped on this as sort of proof that the organization isn't credible. However in his glee, a few things escaped LaBarbera.

While it is true that he is not Paul Cameron and was never denounced by the American Psychological Association, he never says why he would cite someone who was denounced by the American Psychological Association, which is the main reason why the Americans for Truth web site was cited as a hate site.

What Peter does is offer a ridiculous defense of Cameron:

It should be noted that the confusion of two conservative, pro-family advocates is only the most blatant error found in the SPLC documents. We will let Paul Cameron and his Family Research Institute provide a full correction of the SPLC’s misinformation about him (see this FRI post on the APA expulsion claim).

That link is nothing more than Cameron relating a story of how he convinced doctoral dissertation candidates into believing that he was not expelled from the American Psychological Association or the American Sociological Association for distorting research.

And believe it or not, he is right.

Cameron was expelled from the American Psychological Association for not cooperating with the Committee of Scientific and Professional Ethics and Conduct when the committee was investigating claims by fellow researchers that Cameron was distorting their work. See the letter from the American Psychological Association here

And as for the American Sociological Association:

In 1985, the American Sociological Association (ASA) adopted a resolution which asserted that "Dr. Paul Cameron has consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented sociological research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism" and noted that "Dr. Paul Cameron has repeatedly campaigned for the abrogation of the civil rights of lesbians and gay men, substantiating his call on the basis of his distorted interpretation of this research." The resolution formally charged an ASA committee with the task of "critically evaluating and publicly responding to the work of Dr. Paul Cameron."

At its August, 1986 meeting, the ASA officially accepted the committee's report and passed the following resolution:

The American Sociological Association officially and publicly states that Paul Cameron is not a sociologist, and condemns his consistent misrepresentation of sociological research. Information on this action and a copy of the report by the Committee on the Status of Homosexuals in Sociology, "The Paul Cameron Case," is to be published in Footnotes, and be sent to the officers of all regional and state sociological associations and to the Canadian Sociological Association with a request that they alert their members to Cameron's frequent lecture and media appearances."

Nice try, Peter and Paul.

Then LaBarbera tries to nitpick with SPLC over his behavior at several junctures:

  • The Lambda Report on Homosexual Activism, the precursor and flagship print publication of Americans For Truth, was not “inflammatory” but reported using firsthand information gathered from homosexual activist groups and “gay” events. Besides, the SPLC, with its reckless and preposterous linkage of demented, racist fringe groups like the KKK to mainstream pro-family conservative groups such as AFTAH and pro-Constitution Tea Partiers — all under the rubric of alleged “hate” — is in no place to lecture anyone about being “inflammatory”;
  • LaBarbera was never a member of the American Psychological Association and is not a scientist, hence he was never expelled; here the SPLC mistakes him with Cameron [Editor's Note: for years the Left has distorted the facts surrounding Cameron's association with the APA; see this PhD dissertation apology to Cameron] (Alvin - I covered this already.)
  • LaBarbera’s work has not been “denounced by the American Psychological Association”; again, here the SPLC writer, relying on the 2005 erroneous SPLC report, mistakes LaBarbera for Cameron.
  • At the 2006 Vision America conference in question, “The War on Christians,” LaBarbera did not call homosexuality “disgusting” but referred to specific homosexual acts and their unhealthy consequences as such. He continues to believe that shame, not pride, should be associated with all homosexual conduct because it is immoral.
  • At the same Vision America conference, LaBarbera did not call for the closing of all homosexual “establishments,” but for shutting down homosexual sex clubs and bathhouses as public health hazards. These sex businesses — which helped AIDS explode nationally in the eighties — facilitate anonymous homosexual sexual encounters and hyper-promiscuity, which spreads disease and harms both men who have sex with men and and the women who are in relationships with these men. (The latter often are unaware of their partners’ secret promiscuity.)
AFTAH repeats its challenge to Mark Potok, Southern Poverty Law Center’s director, to a public “Debate on Hate” regarding the SPLC’s politically-motivated “hate” designations.

Peter seems to have jumped on an error by SPLC and is trying to pump it up into something huge, but when one looks at exactly what he is saying, it is nothing there but a pitiful man still smarting over being called out over his lies.

But instead of jumping on Potok, how about challenging me, Peter. I listed 10 reasons why your web site is a hate site. What do you have to say about these:

1. Smearing gays via a CDC report on an increase on HIV while intentionally downplaying the part of the report which clearly places the blame on this increase on homophobia (while at the same time implying that the report "dispels the homophobia causes AIDS propaganda")

2.
Defending a bill which would lead to the imprisonment and possible genocide of Ugandans simply for being gay or lesbian.

.
3. Going to subcultural leather events and using the "racy" behavior of gays attending to stigmatize the entire lgbt community while ignoring the behavior of heterosexuals at the same events.

4
. Making ugly comments about a "transgender quota" in the Obama Administration simply because the president appoints a (very, very qualified) transgendered woman to an office in his administration.

5.
Instigating a  highly inappropriate comment about gays, lesbians, and sexual intercourse; a comment so ugly that it led to a feud between three religious right groups.

6.
Continuously citing the work of the discredited researcher Paul Cameron, even when made aware of his dubious history of getting kicked out of medical groups, censures and rebukes.

7.
Aiding and abetting Conservapedia spread lies about gay health using the fictional term "gay bowel syndrome."

8.
Freely admitting to errors when it comes to claims against the gay and lesbian community but not taking responsibility for them.

9.
Falsely accusing the Democratic National Convention and the Gay and Lesbian Task Force of putting on a sadomasochistic event.

10.
Attempting to imply that a staph infection was the new HIV and then lying about his implications when caught.

I await your answer, but I know it will never come.

President of ex-gay group stretches truth in letter to Washington Post

Apparently there is a small controversy brewing in Washington, D.C.

The mayor there, Adrien M. Fenty, accidentally gave an award of appreciation to the former president of the ex-gay group PFOX, Regina Griggs.

After a lot of outcry, Fenty said the award was given by accident.

Naturally, the "professional ex-gays" are crying foul, such as the now president of PFOX, Greg Quinlan. In a letter to the Washington Post, he said:

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) should not apologize for recognizing Regina Griggs, executive director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) and a family advocate who has been instrumental in ensuring civil rights to all D.C. residents.

The lawsuit filed last year by PFOX against the D.C. Office of Human Rights resulted in ex-gay men and lesbians being recognized as a protected class under the District's Human Rights Act. The office had refused to extend D.C.'s sexual orientation nondiscrimination law to former homosexuals. But the court held that the Human Rights Act does not require immutable characteristics for sexual orientation status, so ex-gay men and lesbians are entitled to the same legal protections that gays enjoy.

But like so many things Quinlan has said in the past (such as when he distorted the words of Dr. Francis Collins), this is a serious stretching of the truth.

The law suit happened because PFOX sued the NEA for denying it an exhibit booth at the groups's national convention in 2002 and PFOX actually lost this case.

According to the web site Box Turtle Bulletin:

PFOX sued in the District of Columbia under the District’s very inclusive Human Rights Act claiming discrimination against ex-gays. On May 24, 2005, the Office of Human Rights issued stated that PFOX had no probable cause because ex-gays are not members of a protected class under the HRA based on the plain language of the statute and even if PFOX was part of a protected class, NEA rejected PFOX’s application for non-discriminatory reasons.

PFOX appealed in federal court and on June 26, 2009, Federal Judge Maurice Ross issued his opinion.

The basis for OHR’s finding that ex-gays are not protected was that because PFOX denies that orientation is immutable, therefore they by definition were not discriminated against due to an immutable characteristic. In other words, those who believe orientation to be innate are protected by non-discrimination laws while those who believe it is transitory are not.

While that is an amusing and ironic position, it didn’t fly with the judge. Because the case was tried under D.C.’s HRA, there is no requirement for immutable characteristics.

Indeed, the HRA lists numerous protected categories such as religion, personal appearance, familial status, and source of income, which are subject to change. The HRA’s purpose is “to secure an end in the District of Columbia to discrimination for any reason other than that of individual merit….”

Furthermore, according to Box Turtle Bulletin:

. . . most importantly, the judge found that it is perfectly reasonable for the NEA to exclude PFOX. Because the NEA did not exclude them for being ex-gay, but rather because they have a disruptive political agenda that is contrary to that of the NEA.

The NEA did not reject its application because PFOX’s members include exgays, homosexuals, heterosexuals, or members of any other sexual orientation. Rather, NEA rejected PFOX’s application because PFOX’s message and policies were, in NEA’s opinion, contrary to NEA’s policies regarding sexual orientation.

Jeremy Hooper of Goodasyou.org broke it down like this and I agree with his assessment:

The court in NO WAY said that "ex-gay" classification is anything right, valid, scientific or rhetorically sound, or in any way deserved of every last right specific classification that LGBTS people receive -- especially since, of course, "ex-gay" people ALL fall into one of those scientifically recognized categories (or asexuality, alternately)! The court in no way denied that PFOX's mission is hostile to others. And of course the court in no way said that PFOX is deserved of any kind of honor, especially from a city that so richly values respect -- something that PFOX (whose spokesman recently tagged the awesome and peaceful PFLAG organization as a "hate group") refuses to show you to happy, healthy LGBT people and the credible, peer-reviewed information that supports them!

Is the Family Research Council playing quiet damage control over George Rekers incident?

From blogger Joe Jervis (Joe.My.God) comes this interesting tidbit:

On his personal website, homo-hooker loving Dr. George Rekers links to the Family Research Council's "about" page to note his having been one of their co-founders. Whoops, he's already been erased from the FRC's site, not even 12 hours after the news broke that Dr. James Dobson's one-time buddy has been having his sack lifted by a barely legal Latino twink. Tony Perkins works fast! Does that sting just a little bit, Doctor? Man overboard!

If this is the case, then it is obvious that the Family Research Council is playing a game of quiet damage control regarding the recent incident of Rekers found traveling with a male escort. However, if one would assess the history of the FRC when it comes to deleting things from its page, Rekers has nothing to worry about.

Last year, the Family Research Council removed several studies from its web site about homosexuality. A representative claimed that the studies were removed because they were "outdated." However, the information contained in these so-called "outdated" studies was found to be recycled in new studies on the web site.

Therefore, I'm sure that if FRC is eliminating all traces of Rekers to cover itself, when and if this incident ever blows over, his name will pop back up on the web site.

Irony alert! Janet Porter dropped from VCY America

For Janet Porter, the hits keep coming.

According to People for the American Way's Right Wing Watch, she has been dropped from VCY America, which carried her daily radio program, because of her "increasing involvement with dominion theology." VCY America's Vic Eliason reportedly said Porter had been warned about this sort of thing on more than occasion. He also said:
Because of the long standing of Faith2Action on VCY America, which has provided satellite services, air time, production, and line fees without charge, we know there will be many who will question its discontinuance.

VCY has been wrestling for months with the drift of the program toward "dominion theology" and ecumenism.

The following links bring up articles which describe the issues in detail

The Coalescing of the Religious Right with Apostolic Dominionism
May Day Prayers: What Repentance?

This has not been an easy decision, but a line has been crossed that VCY America cannot ignore. Faith2Action has chosen to go in a direction that is not consistent with the biblical position of VCY America.

This announcement comes at the heels of a huge flop of an event, "May Day 2010: A Cry To God For A Nation In Distress," which Folger was in charge of. She and other organizers expected close to 8,000 attendees, but only a few hundred showed up.

Dominion theology, by the way, is the belief that Christians must take over world institutions in order to create conditions that would lead to the return of Christ.

Porter had espoused this belief not only during Saturday's failed event but also earlier during a prayer in which she demanded that God give Christians control of the media.

The irony of her being dropped from VCY America proves one thing - the Lord does move in mysterious ways.

More from religious right May Day 2010 hot mess

Peter LaBarbera's "prayer" in regards to "homosexuality promotion zones" only scratches the surface when it comes surreal zaniness during Saturday's religious right event (and  $70,000 COLOSSAL flop) “May Day 2010: A Cry To God For A Nation In Distress.”

People for the American Way's Religious Right Watch broke it down in easily digestible (but still nauseating) chunks:

. .  including Ted Baehr repenting for the movie "The Runaways" with its sex, and drugs, and rock and roll, while others repent for Los Angeles and its role as the home of the pornography industry. Eventually, Janet Porter repents for all the time and money Christians have given to an industry that hates God and prays that Christians will gain control over the industry and take dominion until Christ returns. That is then followed by a woman from Minnesota who repents for her state having elected the first Muslim to Congress ... and then eventually God shows up at the rally.

With all due respect, because I don't like to be in a position to attack religious beliefs, this event was about a small number of ill-informed, religiously obnoxious individuals making huge asses of themselves.

A few thoughts:

What with these folks and Dakota Fanning?

According to Ted Baehr in his prayer, the religious right wants to take over the arts and entertainment industry and create "a new Michelangelo" and a "new (Leonardo) Da Vinci." Wouldn't that defeat the point of Peter LaBarbera's prayer, seeing that both Michelangelo and Da Vinci were gay?

The hateful prayer in regards to the Muslim Congressman (Keith Ellison) was just wrong. Period.

How pitiful is it for an event to have such low attendance that someone points to the sun's rays and say something like, "see, God is here."

Peter LaBarbera 'obsessed' with schools being 'homosexuality promotion zones'

You think Peter LaBarbera  is obsessed with the lgbt community?

That question was rhetorical seeing all of years, time, and effort he has spent attacking us, demonizing us, and basically trying to make us seem like the "other" in American society.

But the above video takes the cake. It happened this morning during Janet (I'm demanding that God give Christians control over the media) Porter's absolutely ridiculous May Day 2010 event in D.C.

May Day 2010 is one of those "America needs to repent and turn to God before he opens a big can of whip ass on us" events religious right groups generally hold when they are either trying to raise more funds or galvanize more folks through scare tactics.

And I think LaBarbera takes the cake here. According to People for the American Way's Religious Right Watch:

Peter LaBarbera . . . used his five minutes to attack gays, asking God to forgive us for our "excessive tolerance," lamenting "the long secular road America has traveled from 'abomination' to 'gay'," and for allowing "homosexual activists ... to fulfil their wicked plan of turning America's schools, public and sometimes private, into homosexuality promotion zones"

The idea that this silly man accuses the lgbt community of being some secret evil group out of a James Bond is extremely offensive and I would get angry if LaBarbera's prayer wasn't so hilariously ludicrous. Particularly 2:22 to 2:40 when he interrupts his prayer (to God) to explain to the audience one of the sources he cites.

Who knew prayers came with footnotes?

Folks like LaBarbera seem to always forget that lgbts can pray too and not only that, God hears our prayers.

This particular gay man won't be praying for his destruction, only that LaBarbera finally receives some type of inner peace.

Maybe then he will leave the lgbt community alone.

Not that I'm hinting anything, mind you.

UPDATE - According to Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out, the $70,000 event was a HUGE flop.

Family Research Council deliberately misinterpret words of Obama official to discredit ENDA

John Berry is President Obama's director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

He is also openly gay and according to the Family Research Council (FRC), he is also proof that the ENDA (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act) is some type of nefarious plans by the gay community to gain "special rights." Tony Perkins, head of the FRC, said the following in an email:

If ENDA becomes law, the government will order businesses -- including faith-based businesses -- to cast aside their personal beliefs and hire homosexuals and cross-dressers, even if the employer considers these lifestyles immoral and inappropriate for their business.

Even groups like the Boy Scouts and child care providers aren't exempt from the bill's oppressive demands.

Worse still, ENDA will make it easier for activist judges to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act -- the most important protection for marriage that exists in our country!

I know that because the most powerful open homosexual in the Obama administration says it will:

John Berry, the director of the federal personnel office, says: "If we can get ENDA enacted and signed into law, it is only a matter of time" before pro-family, pro-marriage laws topple under its weight.

Even without FRC's track record for relying on distortions and fear tactics, it's easy to see that the organization's email contains a complete bastardization of Berry's words.

According to the Washington Blade (by way of lgbt-positive webpage Queerty and the anti-gay web page Americans for Truth), Berry was addressing Out for Work’s national convention at the Westin City Center Hotel in D.C. in September of last year and this is what was actually said:
Berry advocated for the importance of ENDA — and identified repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act as other priorities — in response to an audience member’s question about possible legislative issues on the horizon and criticism that President Obama isn’t moving quickly enough on LGBT issues.

“The most important thing we can do right now is we got to … secure the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act — and it’s got to include full transgender protections,” Berry said. “I believe that if we all concentrate our efforts where it needs to be concentrated, which is on the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, we can get the job done.”

Other pro-LGBT legislation can be more easily achieved, Berry said, if Congress were to pass ENDA.

“If we can get ENDA enacted and signed into law, it is only a matter of time before all the rest happens,” he said. “It is the keystone that holds up the whole bunch, and so we need to focus our energies and attention there.”

This is what Berry said about DOMA:
Berry noted that Obama has called DOMA [discriminatory] and urged for its legislative repeal, but the OPM director added the best way toward overturning the law would be through the courts and not Congress.
“I will tell you personally I believe that I think the courts will strike this down before Congress will have to repeal it legislatively,” he said. “And thank goodness because, in this case, the backbone is not there in Congress.”
Now some may argue that the definition of a  "pro-family" law is up for interpretation, therefore there may not have been any distortion of Berry's quote on that point.  This is a matter of perspective. Clearly to FRC, anything that benefits the gay community is not pro-family,  in spite of the fact that a myriad of lgbt families populate this country.

However in regards to so-called "pro-marriage" laws,  Berry in no way said that ENDA would make it easier for judges to overturn DOMA. He merely said that litigation through the courts could overturn DOMA.

Whatever the case may be, for FRC to claim that Berry said "If we can get ENDA enacted and signed into law, it is only a matter of time" before pro-family, pro-marriage laws topple under its weight is a deliberate misinterpretation of his words.

And for those familiar with FRC's habit of claiming angel wings while hiding its horns and pitchfork, it's business as usual.

Know Your LGBT History - Theatre of Blood

One of my favorite horror movies is the 1973 Vincent Price camp classic Theatre of Blood.

In it, Price portrays a actor who murders his critics in the form of scenes from Shakespearean plays. One critic is stabbed to death like in Julius Caesar, another is drown in a vat of wine like the Duke of Clarence in Richard III, and another critic (who happened to be gay) is tricked into eating his pet dogs whom he refers to as his "children" (which is a take off of the play Titus Andronicus where the evil queen Tamora is tricked into eating her two sons baked in a pie).

But for the purpose of this post, it is the scene where Price dispatches critic Chloe Moon (Coral Browne) under the nose of a police guard which stands out. An afro wig, a fey accent, and a name like "Butch" would spook me too. Try as I might to be offended, I can't. The scene starts at 4:00:

Another thing which is simply trivial, the looks Browne is giving Price when he has her tied up is probably not in the script. The two fell in love during the making of this movie and were later married.

Look out! Here comes a new distortion about changing sexual orientation

Imagine my surprise this afternoon when I read the following from One News Now:

Researchers at Fordham University have released a study showing that homosexual men can change their "orientation" by developing healthy, non-sexual relationships with other men.

The study was published in the Journal of Men's Studies (March 2010). Greg Quinlan, president Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX,) tells OneNewsNow it serves as confirmation to "everything that we've been saying all along."

The One News Now article did not go into detail about the study so I looked elsewhere to find more information.

Lifesite News said the following:

Researchers at Fordham University in New York have published a study in the March edition of the Journal of Men's Studies, showing that positive results can be gained by homosexual men seeking to change their “orientation” by developing healthy non-sexual relationships with other men.

According to the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homoseuxality (NARTH), the study rovides “valuable empirical evidence” from the mainstream of psychological research supporting environmental factors as the cause of homosexuality.

The study, by Dr. Elan Y. Karten and Dr. Jay C. Wade, examined the “social and psychological characteristics” of men who experience unwanted homosexual attractions and who seek “sexual orientation change efforts” (SOCE).

Investigating these characteristics in cases of “self-reported change,” Karten and Wade found that clients reported that they experienced “a decrease in homosexual feelings and behavior, an increase in heterosexual feelings and behavior, and a positive change in psychological functioning” with SOCE.

Don't be fooled by the link that supposedly leads to the study. It actually leads to a NARTH (National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality) summary of the study.

And as many of us know, based on NARTH's history of embracing inaccurate theories about the gay community, it's not a good idea to trust the organization's summary of anything.

So where is the study and why won't these folks lauding it go into detail about it? Are they omitting something?

Dr. Warren Throckmorton of Grove City College, there is some serious misrepresentations going on.

Now I should break in and say that in many cases, Throckmorton and the lgbt community has not seen eye-to-eye on several issues.

But there are times in which Throckmorton calls out the religious right on their lies. He does such a good job at it that "our friend" Peter LaBarbera has directed barbs at him.

And the way I see it, anyone who upsets LaBarbera can't be all bad.

In this particular case, Throckmorton calls out One News Now and NARTH for distorting this study. I bolded the most important part of Throckmorton's statement:

Here is the OneNewsNow title:
‘Orientation’ change efforts effective.
Here is a statement from Karten and Wade (p. 86):
The purpose of the study was not to replicate findings from prior research or establish the efficacy of this treatment.
Now the way NARTH discusses the study, one might think replication of prior change research was the intent, but it was not a study that was designed to “establish the efficacy” of sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE). Rather, the authors surveyed 117 men who were trying to change and asked them what seemed to be working in their quest. It was not an outcome study and there were no follow up interviews with any of the subjects.

OneNewsNow says this:
Researchers at Fordham University have released a study showing that homosexual men can change their “orientation” by developing healthy, non-sexual relationships with other men.
As noted by the article, the study did not demonstrate change via any mechanism nor was the stated intent of the study to establish this finding. The study was not designed in such a way that change could be verified. Karten recruited participants from Journey Into Manhood participants and from therapists who conducted change therapy. The subjects were only required to have some same-sex attraction, meaning that we do not know how many, if any, exclusively homosexual men were in the study. There was only one measurement of sexual attraction via the survey with no follow up measures. Thus, change was not really measured, in that there was no pre-treatment or post-treatment assessments. Participants were asked to rate how helpful various interventions had been and various characteristics relating to masculinity.  Nothing causative can be inferred from any of the reported correlations.

One News Now and NARTH distorting a study on sexual orientation? It must be a normal day.

Matt Barber switches from lying about lgbts to just plain lying

Maybe the lgbt community is boring the Liberty Counsel's Matt Barber.

Or maybe maligning us by describing our relationships as “one man violently cramming his penis into another man’s lower intestine and calling it ‘love" or going to bizarre detail about our alleged sex habits just isn't getting him enough hits when he possibly googles his name.

Whatever the case may be, in his latest column, Barber doesn't say hardly a word about lgbts. It's a shame, however that he continues his habit of lies and misdirection.

The column is about how there is a so-called groundswell to President Obama's alleged "neo-Marxist, secular-humanist agenda."

Now Barber lists several dubious examples of this, including one which really caught my eye. It concerns the incident where several tea party members made racist and homophobic statements at Congressional leaders:

And so, the mainstream media hit back, latching like pit-bulls to a poodle on iffy reports that Tea Partiers had shouted racist and "homophobic" slurs at black members of Congress and, well, Barney Frank (claims which, as it turns out, were apparently fabricated whole cloth).

Conservative pundit Andrew Breitbart offered $100,000 reward to anyone able to provide video or audio of the alleged slurs. Despite scores of television cameras in the immediate vicinity, no one has produced a shred of evidence.

I guess I latched on to that part of Barber's unintentionally humorous column because it underscores not only Barber's intentional deception but the deception of entities that would print Barber's mess under the guise that it represents "Christian values."

The fact that homophobic and racial slurs were shouted has been backed up by several other reports, including a very detailed one by Washington Post ombudsman Andrew Alexander. This report includes the fact that there is video footage of a derogatory comment aimed at Frank.

It's also convenient that Barber did not reveal that one of the black legislators in question was John Lewis, an icon who was one of  the leaders of African-American civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s. Of course mentioning this would probably ruin Barber's inference that lies were told against the tea party members. After all, who would anyone in their right mind believe - protesters, some carrying signs comparing the African-American president to Hitler or a man who was marched and beaten over civil rights?

One would also question Barber citing Breitbart's challenge of video proof, seeing that for a long time, Breitbart was peddling a video as evidence that the slurs weren't said until the Associated Press pointed out that his proof was inaccurate.

Of course the point is not the slurs or the supposed "neo-Marxist, secular-humanist agenda" (what is that anyway) of President Obama.

The point is just how easy it is to put on the cloth of Christian respectability when one is repeating lying talking points whether it be about President Obama, Congressional leaders, or the lgbt community.

Reasons why the 'sanctity' of proms MUST be preserved from Constance McMillen

I'm having the misfortune of being ill today, which means no long expositories on the evils of the religious right.

But just because I'm feeling not so happy today doesn't mean you have to suffer, so from infoMania, here is a new, original take on the Constance McMillen prom controversy:

Undercover at an ex-gay camp

Ted Cox, a writer at AlterNet, spent a weekend undercover at "Journey into Manhood,” a 48-hour weekend retreat designed to help gay men become straight."

What he experienced is a macabre mixture of the bizarre and sad:

I sat on the floor between the outstretched legs of a camp guide, my head leaning back against his shoulder. The guide sat behind me, his arms wrapped around my chest. This hold was called “The Motorcycle.” Five men surrounded the two of us, their hands resting gently on my arms, legs and chest.

There were about ten other groups like this sitting on the floor in the darkened room: one guide giving “healing-touch therapy” while the surrounding men rested their hands on the receiver. Some men were held in the Motorcycle position. Others were turned towards their guide, cradled the way a parent would hold a sobbing child who had just scraped her knee on the sidewalk.

In one corner of the room, a portable stereo played Shaina Noll’s song. At one point, the staff members all sang out in unison, their voices filling the high walls of the camp lodge. Somewhere in the room, a man sobbed over the sound of the music.

It was the first night of “Journey into Manhood,” a 48-hour weekend retreat designed to help gay men become straight. In that room, about fifty men — some thirty “Journeyers” and fifteen staff members — sat on the carpeted floor of a ranch lodge two hours outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Most of the men, except for a few of the staff members, struggled to overcome their attraction to other men.

Sometime during all that holding and touching and singing, while I was cradled in the Motorcycle position, I felt it: the unmistakable bulge pressing through his tight jeans. It was the first time in my life I had a felt another man’s erection.

It's nothing to laugh at. Unfortunately, society has conditioned so many people to be ashamed of their God-given sexual orientation. More here at AlterNet.
