Know Your LGBT History - Anita Bryant

Whether she meant to or not, former Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner and spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission became an icon in lgbt history after her controversial and successful campaign to repeal a pro-gay rights ordinance in Dade County, FL in 1977. She won the battle but lost the war. She had other victories in other states, but she also galvanized the gay rights movement big time. Subsequently, her career was ruined. However, her legacy still stings our community. It was the first time someone used the "gays are a public hazard, particularly to our children" argument to defeat pro-gay legislation. And it would not be the last. Bryant provided a blueprint to future generations of bigots and homophobes:

Now the following is a clip everyone seems to remember. Bryant was assaulted by a gay man who hit her in the face with a pie. I am NOT for this sort of behavior. I don't care how empowering it allegedly feels. And I am totally against anyone who feels that we should do this sort of thing now (hello those who remember that stupid idea of throwing glitter on people). In the fight for equality, we should never stoop to levels which make us look like rabid dogs:

Not that'll make you feel better, Alvin, but if Bryant didn't say "the gayz are coming for our children!", then someone else would've. The "won't someone think of the children!?" meme is infamously popular among people who fear change, so as gay rights progressed, someone was bound to accuse homosexuals of being "hazardous" to children somewhere along the way.

Wasn't the pie incident the turning point for Anita? It is amazing that she would still think that she is right after all of this time, her bigotry and hatred must be to the bone. In the years since, she and her husband have left thousands and thousands in unpaid bills from her "comeback" exposing herself as the grifter she truly is.

That woman will forever live in infamy, because she just can't help herself.

Yes she will live in infamy for the rest of her days.

And she deserves it.

And the pie in the face - I think it was appropriate. It has morphed into Glittering today which I still think is appropriate too.

Alvin, apart from being a very talented writer and commentator, you are far more tolerant and forgiving than I am.

To wit: The video prompted me to recall a segment on the prison show "Lock Up." An inmate recounted how another prisoner broke a light bulb into tiny pieces, mixed it with his feces and rammed "the pie" into a guard's face. He noted with smug glee that when the victim attempted to wipe it away, the glass cut deeper, causing agonizing pain and a far more severe injury.

I wish that on no one (not even W.), but I can't help but notice that Anita needed to hurl one more hateful slur when she was attacked, noting "At least it was a fruit pie." Led me to think: Could have been a lot lo worse, sweetie. A LOT worse.

What a stroll down memory lane - even if we might prefer that some memories be forgotten. I remember the orange juice boycotts in gay bars across the country.

To me, Anita Bryant is one of the earliest faces of what's wrong with Christianity, specifically evangelical Christianity.
