The fear of a Trump presidency is real and justified

Across America (even across the world), people are in fear of the coming administration of Donald Trump. It's not enough that he is unqualified and totally unpredictable.

The bulk of his campaign scapegoated people of color and of different faiths. Also,  many Republicans and other entities who support him do so because he fits into their plans of eliminating Obama's legacy or causing havoc for lgbt equality.

But instead of me talking, I want you to read a something a good friend of mine sent me. It's eloquent because of its brevity :

I am a gay man
I am a US Navy Veteran
I am pagan
I am disabled

All of my rights have been threatened by the president elect.
For the first time in my life, I am terrified to live in "the home of the free and the brave."

My partner and I will not have any of the same rights you and your wife enjoy.

I served my country as a member of the US Navy. I have post traumatic stress disorder.  My rack was set on fire with me in it while people yelled "Burn, witch, burn." No one was ever held accountable for the crime committed against me. I still do not have all of the benefits of a US Veteran. Now I look at the looming fact that I may not even get to keep what I have.

You will never know what it's like to be persecuted. I have been burned for being pagan. I have been attacked three times for being gay. I have had to fight for equal rights all of my life. All I ever asked was to stand as an equal with the rest.

When have you ever had to fight for your equal rights. I fought and bled for this country. I am a citizen and to this day I have never had the same rights and freedoms that you enjoy.  So when someone threatens the few freedoms that I do have, hell yes it does scare the hell out of me. And every other American citizen out there who have any reasons to fear this new administration's professed goals.

How we got to Trumpland and what we, especially lgbts, should do now

Warriors endure and now we, especially lgbts, must learn that lesson.

So. IT happened and subsequently the joyous news I had hoped to post about Hillary Clinton becoming our first female president will no longer be a reality.

Instead, at the very least for four years, our president is a egotistical, coarse windbag who is more talk than action; a man who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or going to do. A man whose supposed wealth and reality television star status partly led the way to him walking into the White House on the backs on unfortunately gullible people who felt that their "country was being stolen."

Now before liberals and progressives begin with the circular firing squads (and I really hope they don't, but that's like asking for the sun to stand still and I am not Joshua from the Bible), we need to ask ourselves how we got here.

There will be some individuals who claim that Clinton was a flawed candidates and the Democrats should have chosen Bernie Sanders, but come on. Trump brought out all sorts of ugliness in his followers and this election. Switching from "don't vote for Clinton because she is corrupt" to "don't vote for Sanders because he is a member of the Jewish cabal, like Soros" would not have been difficult for them to do.

Trump's path to the White House began eight years ago on the night of President Obama's inauguration, when a group of GOP legislators and allies plotted to undermine him in order to make him a one term president. They plotted to work against his efforts to bring stability to the country. Aiding them were little nasty tendrilic entities, such as Fox News who daily put out negative slants on Obama. "He is apologizing for America,"  "He hates America," "His stimulus isn't working," "He isn't creating jobs."  "He is constantly in over his head." "Obama won't lead"  "He is for completely open borders." "Obama isn't a citizen of this country"

Obama was too powerful for them to undermine totally, so he easily won a second term. But effects of their constant harping, and the continued resistance of the GOP to cooperating with Obama, did have an effect. It poisoned a segment of the electorate. Infected them like a nasty drug, which created a mindset which lowered the tone of our political debate. And the constant barrage of pundits whose debased statements and debased positions offered without proof kept this segment of the electorate hooked like junkies to a vile stew of hate, fear, and a lowering of their own morality.

We weren't dealing with people wanting intelligent discussions of the issues and decent answers. These folks became mental zombies, surrendering their kindness and common sense as entries to a bubble of toxic nonsense which fed them anti-Obama lies, anti-government conspiracies, and false beliefs that this country is constantly on the precipice of a cliff where a bunch of man-eating lions and Islamic terrorists lay at the bottom in anticipation.

That's what created the Trump voter. But even then it wasn't enough to bring the White House (and unfortunately the Senate and House) to the GOP. A foreign entity called Wikileaks daily undermined the Clinton campaign with stolen emails. Lastly, how could we forget FBI Director Comey's unprecedented and unnecessary letter about the Clinton email investigation - i.e. the one factor while stole her momentum and for eight days dominated the news cycle until it was revealed, two days before voting, that it was a huge nothing burger. History will tell us that this letter, more than anything else, probably was the single thing which torpedoed Clinton's chances.

So those who don't know how we got to this point, now you do. A toxic brew of lies, aided by foreign bodies and an assist by a supposedly objective FBI has thrust us into the land of Tramp.

What do we do now? Specifically what does the lgbt community do now?

What we have always done. Dig, scratch, and claw our way back from whatever hole we may have been thrust in. I can't promise that things are going to be easy. An anti-lgbt GOP now controls all branches of the government, so I'm guessing that we are in for it.

But lgbt equality was never for the faint at heart. No matter the optics or semantics, we don't just march in the streets to articulate our anger and then zap, we win.  We have always won our victories through consistent pushing and moving.

We know how to win the hard way because  we have won victories the hard way. And we are going to keep those victories. And even in the face of this mess, we will endure and win again. It's what we have always done. It's what we will always do.

'Trump or Clinton - will the lgbt community do the right thing?' & other Mon. midday news briefs

Editor's note - Barring something monumental happening, Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters will not be posting any items tomorrow. Although, I hope to post something really joyous tomorrow evening.

Trump Or Clinton? The Future Of LGBTQ Rights In America - Yes we do. Avoid folks - even if they are of our own community - who seek to play divide and conquer with various facets of our community. Listen to each other, respect each other, learn from each other. In spite of what happens on election day (and you know who I am rooting for and will vote for) never assume our fight for equality is at an end.

HB 2 top issue among trans N.C. voters - No one has talked about how HB2 could decide the general election in North Carolina. It may play a pivotal role.

Why anti-gay discrimination is illegal, in one short footnote - This is fascinating.

The UN’s New LGBT Rights Watchdog May Be About To Lose His Job - The anti-lgbt industry has people working on this even level. I know this for sure because one of them put me on block a while back.

Meet the Oprah of China, Who Happens to Be Transgender - WONDERFUL article!

One last point - The progress we have made did not come via a magic wand or rubbing on a magic lamp. It took very difficult work by patient people who stood firm in the face of all sorts of hatred and ignorance. If you want to see that progress continue, get off your butts and vote tomorrow (or today if you are able). We want fast change but more often than not, change happens slowly and incrementally via the efforts of those not willing to take second class status. And yes, consider your sexual orientation as a factor when you vote. There is NOTHING wrong with that. As I said before, you all know who I am voting for (Hillary Clinton). I hope you feel and do the same. Still, get off your asses and vote.  Power is not handed over generously and neither equality. And if you aren't willing to fight for yours, then maybe you don't deserve equality.

Nine states want courts to allow anti-lgbt discrimination on grounds of 'religious freedom'

As this election ends (thank God), nine states are projecting an ugly vision for the lgbt community.

From Ontop Magazine:

Nine states led by Texas on Thursday filed a legal brief in support of a controversial “religious freedom” law in Mississippi.

Phil Bryant, Mississippi's Republican governor, is appealing the July ruling that blocked the law hours before it was set to take effect.

The Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act (House Bill 1523) allows businesses to deny services to LGBT people based on their “sincerely held religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

In the brief, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Republican officials from eight other states asked the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals to reinstate the law.

“Americans have the right to peacefully live and work according to their deeply held beliefs, in accordance with the religious freedoms enshrined in our Constitution,” Paxton wrote.

. . . Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi are overseen by the 5th Circuit. A ruling upholding the lower court's order would threaten the plans of socially conservative Republicans in Texas to pass similar laws when lawmakers return to Austin in January.

The friend-of-the-court brief was signed by Maine Governor Paul LePage and the attorneys general from Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Texas asking court to reinstate Mississippi's anti-lgbt 'religious freedom' law

TX Attorney General Ken Paxton
The following is unusual and a bit unnerving.  From the Austin-American Statesman:

Joined Thursday by Republican officials from eight other states, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged a federal appeals court to reinstate a Mississippi law that had been struck down as discriminatory against gay and transgender people.

The Mississippi law, Paxton told the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a legal brief, was intended to protect citizens from being forced by the government into taking actions that violate their religious beliefs, particularly if they oppose same-sex marriage.

“Americans have the right to peacefully live and work according to their deeply held beliefs, in accordance with the religious freedoms enshrined in our Constitution,” Paxton said.

Although civil rights and gay rights advocates say the Mississippi law allowed for government-sanctioned discrimination, socially conservative Republicans in Texas have vowed to pass similar laws when the Legislature convenes in January — a strategy that would be endangered if the appeals court ruled that the Mississippi law was unconstitutional. Precedents set by the 5th Circuit apply to Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

. . . The law, passed in March, would have allowed businesses to refuse to serve gay people and let government employees decline to issue same-sex marriage licenses as long as somebody else in the office was available to perform the task. Those who speak out against gay or transgender people also would have been protected from lawsuits and other reprisals.

Hours before it was to take effect July 1, however, U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves blocked enforcement of HB 1523, saying it violated the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law by allowing for government-approved discrimination against gay, transgender and unmarried people.

Apparently Paxton believes that lgbts should sacrifice our dignity and rights as American citizens because of other people's religious prejudices. The court was right to strike this law down and I don't envision them reinstating it.

'Anti-gay activist wants to 'lock Hillary up' so she won't help lgbt youth' & other Thur. midday news briefs

Hillary Clinton’s plan to fight for LGBT youth - Pay attention, folks. This is important.

Linda Harvey: ‘Lock Hillary Up’ To Prevent Her From Pushing ‘Sexual Weirdness’ To Kids - And of course Linda Harvey is spooked by the above.

Franklin Graham: ‘We’re Going To Lose This Country’ If Donald Trump Doesn’t Win - Good grief, what a drama queen. I thought this was supposed to happen when Obama won in 2012.

A brief history of LGBT involvement in presidential campaigns - History they don't tell you in schools.

Democrats Would Quickly Push LGBT-Rights Bill In Congress If They Win Big - I repeat something from days ago - There is NOTHING wrong with lgbts voting in accordance to how said person in office would treat us and advance our equality. We're no movement's martyrs.

HB2 forum mostly a peaceful conversation with one exception

Last night, the Charlotte Observer held a forum about that awful HB2 law. It went well and was pretty much a good conversation. That is once folks got rid of the "clutter":

Most of the back and forth was polite. After Burton spoke of bathroom safety, City Attorney Bob Hagemann, rose from the audience to point out that a nearby identical ordinance approved in Columbia, S.C., had not led to open bathrooms nor an increase in predatory incidents.

David Chadwick, senior pastor at Forest Hill Church and a spiritual counselor to Gov. Pat McCrory, told the hundreds of audience members on hand that no one deserves to be bullied or singled out. But he said supporters of HB2 are too easily stereotyped by some as intolerant and discriminatory.

But when Erica Lachowitz, a transgender woman from Charlotte, talked about her personal experiences, conservative Christian minister Flip Benham rose from his seat and changed the tone in the theater. Earlier in the evening he let out an audible “Ridiculous” as former Observer writer Elizabeth Leland recounted episodes of violence or harassment LGBT individuals she had discovered around the state.

Now Benham, waving a Bible in one hand, interrupted Lachowitz with a shout of “Abomination!” before pivoting his attention toward Chadwick.

“David, is sodomy a sin? Answer the question,” Benham roared repeatedly as two police officers rushed toward him.

“Get him out of here,” another man shouted as Benham was led through the nearest door.

Chadwick responded by saying his was a God of love, not hate, and that the love might offer the promise of compromise. Earlier in the evening, he had also said this; “You can’t legislate the human heart to change.”

'Ex-gay' rebrand, Catholic Church in Mexico sorry for comment about men's butts' & other Wed. midday news briefs

The bogus plan to rebrand ex-gay therapy - With the anti-lgbt industry, nothing ever goes away. It just gets repackaged.

Republican strategist claims candidate is ‘exploiting’ anti-gay smear campaign - A presidential candidate is attacked by an anti-lgbt smear campaign but to a Republican strategist, said candidate is wrong because he is supposedly "exploiting" the campaign created to smear him. Pull up a chair. This explanation has to be epic.

Religious right donor claims Christians not supporting Trump aren't mature in their faith

If you think yesterday's post on the hypocrisy of the anti-lgbt religious liberty argument was something, then you will love this post.

When it comes to lgbt equality and lgbt in general some folks who call themselves "evangelicals" (huge supporters of the anti-lgbt industry) will start going on about not being "lukewarm.

But I wonder how many feel the same way as Foster Friess, this GOP donor to a multitude of conservative Christian causes (he once backed Rick Santorum), when it comes to Donald Trump:

Apparently Jesus once said "thou shalt support the odious, egotistical vagina-grabbing lout to get the keys to my Father's house."

'Pro-lgbt Christian author discovers she has no 'religious liberty'' & other Tue. midday news briefs

Jen Hatmaker discovers that 'religious liberty' is only for anti-lgbt Christians.

The high cost of popular evangelical Jen Hatmaker’s gay marriage comments - In this situation regarding a Christian author who is lgbt-friendly, we see some folks regard "religious liberty" as being reserved for the type of Christianity which bashes the lgbt community.

Christian retailer doesn't cave, cuts author from its resources - As much as I despise the American Family Association's One News Now, I will link to this article on its page to demonstrate the hypocrisy of what I was talking about in the above article. The comments are disgusting in their false piety and sanctimony.

'Token' civil rights leader attacks Obama's racial heritage for supporting lgbt community

The anti-gay industry (or you can call them the religious right) not only create their own "facts" about the lgbt community. They also create their own African-American civil rights leader whose first item seems to always be attacking the lgbt community.

With that in mind, I give you William Owens of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, a group bought and paid for by the National Organization for Marriage. Owens is known for being the paid black face of right-wing organizations when they need a token. Also, to make matters complete, while he has claimed to be a civil rights activist, no one involved with the actual Civil Rights Movement can remember his presence.

It's just as well. Last weekend at the anti-gay industry event, the Stand 4 Truth conference, he performed the dance which he was getting paid for - castigating President Obama over his support of the lgbt community:

From Right Wing Watch

Owens declared, in remarks broadcast by conference organizers through a Facebook Live stream, that “nobody but a black president could have gotten away with” his LGBT rights agenda, claiming that Obama was able to advance LGBT equality because white people “were afraid to be called racist, so you gave him a pass.” In his support for marriage equality, Owens said, Obama “sold out” and “spit on the graves of all those people who died for civil rights.” Discussing LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination policies, Owens warned that children will soon be “brainwashed from birth,” something that he blamed on “our white brothers who will allow men to go in the restroom with your wife and your children.” “I don’t care about President Obama being black,” Owens continued, “he’s half-black. As far as I’m concerned, he’s not black because he doesn’t understand the black experience.” “So they’re going to brainwash our children from pre-school, telling them it’s alright to feel a certain way. That is terrible. Do you know what that’s doing to a tender mind, to a tender child?” he asked.

'Peter Thiel willing to sacrifice the common queers with his support of Trump' & other Mon midday news briefs

Pet

Peter Thiel: 'What Trump represents isn't crazy and it's not going away' - With all due respect to my lgbt brothers and sisters of a "lighter hue," it must be nice to be white, male and a billionaire when you are gay. It helps for folks to not call you "fudgepacker" and "faggot" to your face. Even if they are plotting behind your back.

Here’s Exactly Why A Vote For Trump Is Vote Against LGBTQ Rights - And this stuff bounces right off of you while it burns the rest of the community, or as you would probably call them, the "common queers."

Peter Thiel's obliviousness creates historic nonsense - A reminder of what I think of Thiel from July.

One last thing for you folks who will probably tell me to think of things besides my sexual orientation when it comes to this election - why in the hell should I? It's what everyone else does. It's definitely what the Latino community and the African-American community is doing. It's what those folks that always seem be labeled as "middle America" is doing. It's what the "anti-lgbt industry" and their supporters are doing. Why should lgbts be told to be different? Why do we have to play the martyr and sacrifice our comfort and well-being, our families, our future, and our children when we have fears and desires which are no different or lesser than heterosexual America? I say to hell with it. An election is the best time TO be selfish.

Trump and his 12 percent of support in the lgbt community

This nauseating image of Trump with a rainbow flag is from a Sunday rally he hold in Colorado. It makes me wish for a recreation of that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the Nazis melted after they opened the Ark of the Covenant.

But save the nausea for more. According to a recent article in The Washington Post, 12 percent of our community supports this wannabe Nimrod. Why? Check out the article:

Gary Gates, Gallup senior researcher and author of the new poll, confirmed that the LGBT community is becoming more politically diverse, as more people feel free to come out. “This increased political diversity is also present in party identification,” he said, meaning more gay Republicans and more mystified — and outraged — LGBT Democrats.

'Witch's coven of haters' meet this weekend to spread homophobia, junk science

Just in time for Halloween, unfortunately:

Stand4Truth Conference Will Focus On The “Politically Incorrect Truth About Sexuality And Gender.” The second annual “Stand4Truth” conference will be held on October 28 and 29 in Houston, TX. The conference purports to tell the “politically incorrect truth about sexuality and gender,” with sessions like “The Truth About Ex-Gay Ministries” and “The Truth of Transgenderism in Ft. Worth” that will advocate for harmful and discredited “ex-gay” reparative therapy.

. . .  Representatives From Five Different Anti-LGBT Hate Groups Will Speak Throughout The Conference. Sandy Rios of the American Family Association (AFA), Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council (FRC), Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, Brian Camenker of Mass Resistance, and Steve Hotze of the Conservative Republicans of Texas are all scheduled to speak at the Stand4Truth Conference. All five groups have been designated as anti-gay "hate groups" by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for their extremist rhetoric and peddling of "known falsehoods" about the LGBT community. At last year’s conference, Camenker proclaimed that LGBT rights advocates would “send us to concentration camps if they could.”

In The Texas Observer, SPLC Senior Fellow Called The Conference A “Witch’s Coven Of Haters.” In an interview with the Texas Observer, SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok described the conference as a “witch’s coven of haters.” Dan Quinn, a spokesperson for the Texas Freedom Network, similarly described the conference attendees as “political activists who delight in generating hate and contempt for LGBT people across the country.”

. . . Sponsors Include Multiple Hate Groups And Advocates For Reparative “Ex-Gay” Therapy. Sponsors of the Stand4Truth conference include Mass Resistance, Liberty Counsel, and a project of Family Watch International (We Are Voices Of Change) -- all of which are designated anti-LGBT hate groups. Other sponsors include David Pickup, whose “Reparative Therapy” organization's website claims that “homosexual attractions” result from “unfulfilled” approval from “primary male relationships”; Light Wins, an anti-gay movie Salon described as 2015’s most “bigoted, dishonest and disgusting film”; and Joel 2:25 International, a Texas-based reparative therapy organization that works internationally to heal the “emotional wounds and relational brokenness” of people “who experience same-sex attraction.”

My guess is the "common sense" these "individuals" are talking about will include statements like the following from FRC's Sprigg in 2008:

Religious right hopes to con Georgia with newest 'anti-Christian persecution' victim

Eric Walsh, the religious right's 'religious liberty' symbol.

In the past, the religious right  has always played the "homosexuality is a dangerous lifestyle" card in order to fight our advancing equality. In the wake of minds changing about the lgbt community and several high-profile losses (including in the case of marriage equality), they have shifted their argument by playing the "persecution card."

It's a simple tactic. They exploit a public incident by exaggerating it immensely and publicizing it even more (making sure to control the conversation) in order to advance an argument that the progression of lgbt equality will lead "Christians" to lose their businesses and rights if they don't kowtow regardless of their religious beliefs.

'The lgbt community outlasts another bigot, but . . .' & other Wed midday news briefs

We laugh at overt homophobia but can't fight it when it's covertly semantic.

R.I.P. Jack Chick – Here’s His Top 5 Most Homophobic Religious Tracts - One of the most offensive homophobes has passed away but his awful characterizations of the lgbt community lives on. The lgbt community has outlasted another enemy, but as the next article demonstrates, what Jack Chick overtly put out can still be used against us in a covertly semantic manner and our leaders lose easily lose their heads instead of knowing how to fight it.

Top LGBT Leaders Are Divided Over Compromising On The Bathroom Fight - Easily the most depressing article of the year:

Conservatives have blocked LGBT nondiscrimination bills by claiming transgender people pose a threat in women’s restrooms. How to break the logjam? Some LGBT leaders say it’s time to support bills that cover housing and employment, but not public accommodations — and largely avoid the bathroom issue.

Yeah, because the religious right won't see this as a capitulation and transfer their fear tactics to other fights. After all, it's not like they don't want us to have SOME rights. Listen. When it comes to lgbt equality, the big elephant in the room has always been the organizations who move people via exploitation of religion and fears about the lgbt community. They did it by aligning gay men with pedophilia, lgbts in general with AIDS, or our desire to marry to a desire to destroy Christianity. And now is the newest model of scaring people with images of "boys showering with girls" or "grown men using the bathroom with little girls." These are all the same fear tactics and lies repeated for as long as I can remember, but we don't publicly recognize them or call them out an aggressive manner.  In our fight for equality, we have yet to confront groups like the Family Research Council and people like Franklin Graham on the level they should be confronted. Our leadership seems to wait until they make the first move and then play defense and catch-up. Instead of fighting individual battles, there needs to be a GENERAL calling out of religious right groups and their tactics. In naming some of these organizations as hate groups, the Southern Poverty Law Center did a lot of that. But we should have and we still can. This so-called cultural battle should never be about why the lgbt community is deserving of equality under the law. The onus should be on the groups who seek to deny us that right. We have proven ourselves time and time again in the courts and in the marketplace of ideas. We should constantly ask organizations like FRC, the American Family Association and people like Bryan Fischer and Franklin Graham, "why do you all feel that we shouldn't have equality. And most of all, what's with all of the lies you tell in the name of morality and Christianity?"

Political ad featuring mother of Pulse Nightclub victim is the one people should watch

I will be honest. I cringe when it comes to using victims of tragedies in political ads. Having said that, this ad packs a wallop. It features Christine Leinonen, the mother of Christopher “Drew” Leinonen — a young man shot and killed along with his boyfriend, Juan Guerrero, and 47 others at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. Ms. Leinonen talks about how her son supported Hillary Clinton and why it is important why we should vote for Clinton. It's both sad but very tasteful and also to the point. I commend Ms. Leinonen for her courage and bravery in the face of her loss.
